It's a shame that great rugby countries like Ireland, Wales and Scotland don't seem to have been able to relive the tremendous success they enjoyed in the '70s and '80s.

Remember Gareth Edwards arguably the best scrum half there has ever been? Wales was a tour de force. The Irish were always a great team to watch. I also love the very open game of the French in that period.

Ah!!! Biltong...Yum. Haven't had any in years, and I miss it. Used to get it from the local butchers, just make a choice from the slabs hanging from the wall behind his counter. ( I was born and brought up in Ndola, Zambia till I was 14

) The African beer...not so much!!

Could be an interesting All Black side to play Portugal.
A centre on one wing, a hooker covering loose forward and a number 8 playing at lock.
Not our top team .
Unless one of the injured locks get better fairly quickly NZ could run into difficulties there and there's not really a good specialist left at home they can call on either.

Good to see Georgia put up a stiff show V Argentina . Not very creative but they played well within their limitations.

I'll be watching the England/South Africa game live (noon PDT...sounds like a beery lunch for me!). Looks like a lot of changes on both sides. Wilkinson won't be playing for England (hurt ankle) so that may cut into their scoring.

I pick South Africa by three!

What the hell? I know England is missing some key players and they are not in form entering the WC but getting their butts kicked so badly. This is just ridiculous, they are the current world champions after all. SA played flawless rugby for sure and sadly I haven't seen a convincing Northern Hemisphere team so far. To put salt on the would it seems they lost their only decent player during the game, I don't think Robinson will be back in this WC. Seriously, I don't mind putting my money on Samoa for their next match.

Hammering, yes. But not the best of games, in my opinion. Some pretty bad passing by SA, and England had no idea what to do with the ball when they had possession, especially when they were close to the SA goal line. I wonder how much England missed Wilkinson.

Random musings.... in no particualr order....

Amercican football could take a clinic from these guys in how to tackle.

Why is it that American football can't hold a candle to this game?

I like how players respect the ref and don't go nuts when they make a tackle or scrore? Too tired????

Why isn't the ball coming out of rucks and mauls faster to keep the defense off guard?

Seems like running the ball is taking a back seat to soccer!!!

Not sure I can make the AB/Portugal game at 4am PDT tomorrow, but probably will watch the Wales/Australia match.

probably because most of the teams dont have backlines that know how to attack, and especially how to break the line so they fall back on the old 10 man game. Grind it up through the forwards and if all else fails boot for touch.

The 3 big southern hemisphere teams are consitantly better at recycling the ball quickly, the ABs and Aussies especially.
I also think fitness comes into it alot, to continually move the ball rapidly through all phases takes a fair toll on the forwards and alot of the tight fives aren't up to it.

Good points, tuatara. Even today, Wales suffered a bit from poor support from the pack when they got the ball out fast.

Did you see the quick service today from loose play by the Aussies against Wales? The continuity was so different from yesterday's less-than-stellar match between England and SA. As a result, today's Australia/Wales game was one of the best so far, especially the second half when the two sides played pretty much evenly. Good ball-handling, passing and running the ball. Just plain good rugby! I'm glad I watched it.

The game between the ABs and Portugal was a tad one-sided!
