100 Greatest Albums (Time Magazine)
Nov 15, 2006 at 2:55 AM Post #31 of 72
Although I disagree with much of what is in that Time list, I still have to say I enjoy seeing lists of this type. The reason being that I've actually discovered some nice albums by reading these type of lists. Although most of the musical choices I make come from other sources, once in a while I'll take the time to look up somthing mentioned on such a list on itunes and give a listen and then sometimes I even go out and buy the album. Some time ago somebody on this forum posted this site which has led me to discover some great albums I would not have gotten otherwise: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/music0.html

Downbeat magazine recently featured The Klezmatics, Sun Ra, and Ken Vandermark all in one issue. That kicks ass, in my opinion.

Also, Avant is a good one. I don't know if they are still around anymore, as I haven't seen any issues recently, but they used to cover all ends of the avant-garde quite sufficiently.

In regards to the list - yes, it's embarrassingly bad. Who thinks we should come up with the "Top 100 Worst 'Of All Time' Lists of All Time"?

None taken. I've got a lot of music, so no matter who does this type of list, seems like I always have at least half of them.

Elvis' 30 #1 Hits is awesome, BTW.

The fact that Pink Floyd isn't on that list makes it a crappy list.

Rob, I've got your back.

I'll quibble with you on four or five of these, but I don't think the list is good at all. Pretty derivative, for the most part, and skipped all the genuinely influential music. Also, rap/hiphop is heavily over-represented. One album, maybe two. In 20 years, rap will be taken about as seriously as disco is today. Fun, maybe, but serious? Hell no.

I won't argue that there are better albums out then stuff by Pink Floyd. But to have a 100 top albums of all time and have no Pink Floyd listed at all is missing out on some classic rock (in my view)

Well, it's not a terrible list, but really you've got to admit it's got WAY too many compilations and greatest hits albums.

BTW - I've got 47 of the 100, and have had another 10 or so at one time or another. Most of what I don't have I'm not all that interested in getting.

Oh, this is a terrible list indeed.
For a variety of reasons...
For me however, even though im not a huge fan, not including Pearl Jam's "Ten" for the 90's is just silly. That albums will go down as one of the most important and influencial rock albums of the past 20 years...
And no Floyd or Doors?
C'mon now.

Agreed. An album that was on top of a charts a few years (DSOTM) doesnt make it and eminem does?? I would prefer them not putting any 2000s albums on there, they havent stood the test of time yet. Ten also has to be on there. But i guess you can't expect too much as this is a very broad topic

That list is stupider than saying the word "stupider".

How can anyone ever say, with a hundred different genres of music, that any album can be in the top 100?
There are a thousand that can be in the top 100 depending on where you live, when you lived, and how you lived. It's like using the expression "normal". What is normal?

Looking on the bright side for a moment: Nevermind, The Stone Roses, OK Computer, Thriller, Who's Next ... there are some albums in there that should be in any list. And if you find it difficult to choose one Beatles album, then the editors of the list did too: there's no way a list of mine would include so many late albums by the Fab Four, but I suppose it saves on arguments.

Looking on the, er, dark side, the absence of Pink Floyd is beyond reprehensible. It strikes me as ridiculous to suggest that R.E.M. have made one of the best hundred albums ever recorded, let alone two: I'm not knocking them, but that's just absurd. A lot of great bands spread their work across multiple albums, and we shouldn't be afraid simply to leave them off the list. Moreover, Stop Making Sense may be my favourite Talking Heads album, but most lists choose a real, non-live album such as Fear of Music.
