I hear that feeding a Project Ember using a 6SN7 via an iFi iDSD.

It could be the ultra sonic noise created by the DSD process setting off arcing in the plate of the 6SN7?

What are the major differences in the Modi2u and the Bifrost? A lot of people talk about how DACs have very little differences between them sonically... Would it really matter with a setup like BH crack and hd650s?

I upgraded from the original modi to the bifrost mb. Improvements were very noticeable. Detail, body, naturalness, it was very significant.

FInally listening to the HD650 with the Gumby+Lyr2 uneven stack. Wow....gorgeous. Someone once told me that you don't get a ton of benefit from decent to great DACs....and boy they were wrong. This is just a flat out better headphone with the Gungnir vs the D1 DAC wise. Wow. I told my friend I'd give them a call tonight and that is gonna have to wait until tomorrow lol.

If your precious DAC was Audioengine D1 then you're imagining this.

If your previous DAC was the Tube D1 then that is far from decent. So it could have made a difference. :)

Do note, the Gumby is a colored DAC unlike regular DS DACs. So it is possible it does sound different. But technically it will sound less accurate.

I've heard a lot of similar responses going from modi to modi2. However I've heard a lot of people say that sonically the difference between modi2u and Bifrost was a lot less... Maybe with more expensive setups the difference could be more dramatic?

You'd could clearly hear the improvments. No need for meters here.

I definitely agree with this. If the difference between modi and modi2u was that significant, original modi to Bifrost let alone MB would be pretty noticeable without a meter.

And do note, this is coming from a person who has a DAC that HeadFonia reviewed as better than V800 and the Conductor DAC. Both these DACs are already slightly better than the Gungnir DAC.

And I am comparing said expensive DAC to cheaper ones like those found in smartphones and sound cards. And I can tell you most of the difference doesn't exist.

No.

All transparent DACs sound more or less identical.

Multibit is NOS, so isn't transparent.

Most DACs are transparent. Including Modi, ODAC, STX, iPhone etc.

Schiit Multibits do oversample, read about it.

You'd could clearly hear the improvements. No need for meters here.

This is true for me too vs 2 of your "transparent" DACS (ODAC, STX), and others.

BTW anyone know how to get to the sennheiser-hd650-impressions-thread? I seem to have got trapped in a sound science infinite loop

Between my original modi and modi2uber there is no difference to me, which makes some sense since they use the same D/A chip from what I could find about them.  Between my Bifrost Uber and MB there was a slight difference in the presentation of the highs, smoother on the MB.  There is bigger difference between my Uber and UD-301 which most of my friends who don't really care can notice, the UD-301 is more dynamic to them.  For me between the uber and MB the price difference is not worth the upgrade, still want to try the 4490 upgrade for the uber

Many people have noted big sonic improvements when they've upgraded to multibit Dac's. The Dac is processing more information this leads to more music. Currawong explained when members were claiming everything sounded bigger. Your actually just getting more music. I was a Dac Dac skeptic before I upgraded. The 650's have taught me lot about audio gear. I've gone through many amps and a couple Dac's because I skimped on lower end gear. Every time I upgraded there were audible improvements. If id'a know then what I know now I would have gone hi-end from the jump. this is only my experience. If you don't enjoy the way your 650's sound, it's usually a) the gears not up for the task. Or b) their sound isn't for you. I'd bet 90% of the time it's a.
