My source chain is my pc (JRiver)(USB) > Topping D90 III Sabre (Balanced out) > iFi iCan Pro Signature (Balanced). Currently listening to the 650 and don't think I could give up these mids so that answers that lol. Maybe I should just sit tight. Then again.......
If I’d never heard the 650, I’d be totally happy with the 660 S2. It’s only the fact that I started my head-fi journey with the 650 and have tried numerous sources before absolutely falling in love with the Bottlehead Crack (the reputation of this pairing is not exaggerated, it turns out), so there’s maybe some sentimental attachment there.
I will probably end up with the 660 S2 as my daily driver, and the 650 / BHC as a separate “sit down, relax, have a drink and listen to an album” kind of setup.

I started my journey with the 650 too. I am re-discovering what I have been missing for years listening to other cans. Some more expensive. These are better. I never really properly amped them so I am listening to them for the first time today really.

So many people in this hobby, forget that the HD650 was once the flagship HP of Sennheiser. I’ve owned an HD650 since 2005 and for me, they still sound like a flagship HP.
So I got a new pair of HD 650's to replace my now 15? 20? year old pair. Amazingly they survived the journey to me in spite of the fact that the (outer) box looks like it got slammed in the UPS truck door. So far sounding very similar to my old pair but we all know how that goes. Audio memory is fleeting and unreliable. So I will break these in and decide if I like them still. Clamping force is greater and a little bit of creaking on the right side. I don't think it's a dealbreaker yet.
Probably a long shot...anyone know what kind of poly bag Sennheiser used for shipping the HD 600 / HD 650 / HD 660 S? Massdrop used the same bag whilst the HD 6XX was in its early run. I think they use something similar now, but the boxes have shrunk, etc.
Anyway, these bags are good for keeping dust off the boxes while they sit my closet and I would love to find the source so I could buy some more for all of my spare Sennheiser boxes that don't currently have any 'cover'.
Okay so I just broke out my HD6XX from the closet. It's been a long time since I used them. I also have an HD600 and more recently got a set of ZMF Bokeh and Aeon 2 Noire. I got a fresh set of pads for my HD600 as well. I swapped the Dekoni pads back to the the HD6XX. Does it make sense the HD6XX has more low end than the HD600?

6XX' bass is elevated slightly vs 600's bass. 6XX, to my ears, does not extend more deeply than 600. To me, 6XX is 'Aeolus' while 600 is 'Auteur' -- to use a ZMF analogy .

I personally prefer the 6XX to the Aeolus, but I prefer the Auteur to the 600. The “super” part of the Aeolus just adds too much excitement to the sound. I like the 6XX exactly because of its laid back, smooth nature. The Aeolus added too much of an edge after a while.
