How to "enjoy" music?
Oct 2, 2006 at 6:37 AM Post #121 of 365
As someone above said. You should really check out some swedish prog rock. Its some of my favorite music.

Pain of Salvation is probably one of the greatest bands ever. You can either listen just for the sake of listening to something heavy, or you can listen to the lyrics and feel them. They have some powerful meanings.

Another swedish metal band is the flower kings. Same as above, just not as good.

And there is always death metal like opeth and in flames.

Mr. Two posts is going to chime in here and try to say something knowledgeable and relevant. Don't worry about my post count. If it makes sense, go with it.

First, I'm skeptical of the validity of this whole situation... but then, I haven't read other posts by Patrick82. Everything I say below is with the assumption that he is being genuine with us.

Almost everyone responding here is missing the point, or dodging around it. You're giving him pointers about music as if you were giving them to someone who already has the requisite emotional response Patrick is looking to stimulate.

The problem is not the music. It sounds like music is just one of many aspects of his life where he does not experience what we, the general population, do experience.

I gather that Patrick experiences music and sound indisinguishably; that is, to him it's all just audible frequencies. Some of it is called music. He's focusing on it for a range of reasons, but what those reasons are is irrelevant to this argument. Likewise, he experiences hair-standing-on-end as a physiological action in itself, not as a byproduct of an emotional state like the rest of us do. He's asking how to make his hair stand on end with music. What he should be asking is how to have an emotional response. He's just getting caught up in the details of how we all manage to do it.

Unfortunately, no amount of description can teach a brain how to feel emotions. It is a process that can be guided, however, with the right kind of counseling and likely a bit of medication, as he seems to be symptomatic of several of the conditions mentioned earlier in this thread. Lots of those symptoms can be a simple matter of brain chemistry. Treatable.

Patrick, you seem to have quite the analytical mind. You seem to have a fine grasp of detail. If any of what I said above seems to be valid as applied to you, perhaps you should serisouly consider a visit to a doctor. They can determine what, if any, course of action may benefit you. I hope this can be something you want for yourself; you're missing out on a lot and there's a good chance that you don't have to.

You're obviously some sort of robot from another planet. Seriously, though, I think he's pulling all of our legs here, no one racks up over 1,000 posts on head-fi without enjoying music.

Do they?

How can you enjoy your equipment so much without having any music you like to play through it?

I could use movies to listen to my system, but DVD is poor quality and there aren't many sounds playing at once. I chose music with multiple sounds mixed together = Trance music.

Multiple test tones are boring because it's hard to remember how something sounds like. With music I can remember it easier and the comparison between tweaks are easy.

This, as stated before could be why you are failing to have "hairs on the back of your neck moments", they don't exist in trance music.

Some moments that get me are...

Jupiter, from Holst's The planets (in fact most of this suite)
The scat solo in Nina Simones feeling good when the band drops back in.
The electric bass solo of amazing grace from bela fleck and the flecktones live at the quick.
The drop at the beginning of adagio on a mozart theme by irakere, when the soprano sax glides in.

I know a lot of people are going to jump om me for this next comment, but it seems like the way you experience music/the worl patrick is something approaching autism. There's heavy evidence that many physics/maths-based brains work very well on physics and maths but fail to work with "people", i.e. they have difficulty with emotion and empathy. There are varying degrees of this phenomenon, and the most extreme become autism/aspergers.

Try finding some music that you love just because it's music. Decide that your rig is "done" and stop tweaking, and begin to listen to music for music's sake.

This HAS to be a joke. If it isn't, I'm scared, because a whole bunch of Swedes are about to get mowed down by Johnny5.

I took the time to read this thread, but will not post further as my tolerance level is regretably and embarrassingly low right now. I admire most of the posters in here who managed to keep their reactions in check.

Are autistic savants affected by placebo?

Oh yeah!!! Totally agree--the best moment of my life (so far...) was playing the first violin part of this piece with the LO (Louisville Orchestra) in a joint concert with the LYO (Louisville Youth Orchestra). We put the choir around the back of the balcony for the end of Neptune--it was a truly life-changing experience!

Ahhh...i see. So youre in this just for the gear? Seems like a waste of money on gear if you dont even enjoy the music you play with it.

Yes. If I haven't made a recent upgrade there's no point in listening to my system. I will keep upgrading until my room doesn't fit enough Brilliant Pebbles. I will cover the walls with ERS paper and Noise Harvesters first, because they give a bigger improvement.

Ooh, the Youth Orchestra I'm playing in is doing Mars for the October Concert. I got the Yoel Levi/Atlanta Sym.Orch. Telarc recording of The Planets, and I know what you mean about Jupiter, I really enjoy it!

I put K1000 on my head and I think something is happening now. The sharp bass is starting to make my body vibrate by itself, weird stuff!

Is this what you are talking about?

It seems like my body is starting to move more and more, if this continues then soon I am banging my head...

Ok, thats it... I don't believe it any more. I am fairly confident this is an act.
