my attempt to purchase a source fell through...

I've tried all kinds of alcohol, everything from beer to martinis, and I've yet to find something that I actually enjoy drinking. But I guess it's an acquired taste.

And lack of parties is not the issue, believe me: I live in Eugene now.

There are parties every weekend, if not every day, that I could drunk at if I wanted to. Still, if you do throw a party or two then I wouldn't say no if invited.

Try Wodka. Either the White or Black Russian, or Screwdriver. As long as you only drink Wodka you'll be fine. Avoid any other drink at all. As soon as you have a zip ofm whatever, you'll wake up the next day in a remote location, perhaps after sleeping with someone you don't wan to see again, ever.

Another thing you can try is red wine. It makes you look cool with the ladies. Get Chateau Cantenmerle, around 100 bucks a bottle, fruity and fresh. Remember, reds and pinks go with meat. If the price is to steep, get Concha y Toro and/or Casillero del Diablo, they are cheaper but very good.

And remember, you don't want to acquiere a taste for alcohol, just learn to enjoy it in moderation. It's better that way.

Wow, this thread has gone from "let's find Neruda a source," to "let's find Neruda some sauce."

that's just the way it is on these boards, jon: all these raging alcoholics! if they're not spending their money on headphones, they're spending it on booze.

Haha, actually, that's true. I really don't buy anything except music, audio equipment, and alcohol. Occasionally food when I remember to eat. (Really, what else do you need anyway?)

Neruda, there's nothing wrong with not drinking. I have at least a few friends who don't drink at all. The worst thing about that situation, though, is that the sober ones end up cleaning everything up. That and it's just weird to be one of like four sober people on a college campus on a weekend night.

In the event that you do just feel like getting crocked, however, you can always pretend you're a woman and stick with Jell-o shots and mixed drinks. That's about as good as you're going to get on taste. And there are beers out there that taste like water -- Keystone Light, for instance. Other drinks, like Bailey's Irish Cream in various things, don't really taste like alcohol.

But if alcohol's just not your thing, there's always cocaine.

Sorry, this thread is just so fun that I had to re-open it and let the discussion continue. It's so friendly!

If you have a girl's taste in alcohol (oops, just made it a flaming thread

) then you should drink peach schnapps. Or try a whisky sour -- if you meet someone who can make them right, even the daintiest of college freshmen will enjoy it. Also try sweet Jewish wines like Kesser and Manischewitz. Cheap as hell and very sweet/sugary. And no, don't anyone even think of recommending Mad Dog because that's just disgusting. And hopefully Ian will work on the beer aspect this summer.

Ahem -- butterknife.

Okay, to try to get back on topic...

I got lucky with a junior dorm room as a sophomore. It pays to have upperclassmen among your friends.

Anyway, I still have a problem with placement of my gear -- I have a nice bookshelf, the top of which can be used for gear because it doesn't have a wall at the back like the lower shelves. I use that for my CD player. I moved the bookshelf next to my computer desk -- my Melos (which is big) sits on the right side of the desk. This is not an ideal set-up because I lose a lot of desk-space this way (no room for the Tivoli radio I wanted to buy now). I manage, though. But really it's because I do have an LCD monitor which saves me a lot of space. My soundcard's breakout box is on the left-front side of my desk. If I could upload my images to my computer from my digicam I'd take a few snapshots.

Last year when my dorm room was smaller, I put my Marantz on the dresser -- on top of that I put my Creek integrated (until I returned it) and on top of that I put my Melos. I just used little towels in between the units to protect their tops from the scratchy feet. I suspect, though, that the actual volume of your system is much less than mine. Keep in mind that putting a CD player that doesn't have great damping onto a window sill without support for all the feet will result in inferior sound -- not to mention the chance that the thing will fall on the floor and for the laser to lose alignment.

Okay, enough ranting. Please take a photo and show us what your dorm room looks like! I'll upload a photo of my dorm room from last year so you can see that set-up.

gladly. I have a friend with a digital camera, and she already let me take a bunch of pictures of my drums and stuff. I'd show them to you but I don't have a place to post them online yet.

anyway, the sony's supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

for the last time guys, it will NOT fall to the floor! It's not going to be hanging over the floor, it will be over my desk. When I post the picture, what I'm trying to describe will be totally obvious.

I'd like to see your guys' pictures and any others of gear in dorm rooms or really small spaces. I'm pretty much limited to my desk, which luckily is big, because I have two bikes, a weight bench, a chair, a big mini-fridge, and other random crap in my small, POS room. I'll try to post some pictures later.

Neruda, I have some webspace I can put pictures up for you if you need it.

Chas, I see what you mean. I was just replying and the posts showed below the reply window did not include wherever it was you said it'd be hanging over the desk. I have a similar arrangement here, except that my desk is higher than the window sill.

I realized I forgot to upload the pics to imagestation or check if they're already there. I'll do that now I guess.

That does tend to make headphone listening a bit of a challenge.
