From Sennheiser US:

"Thanks for your inquiry. The latest version of the HD25-1 II is essentially the same exact product as the older HD25. If you haven't tried a pair of these yet, you will be amazed at the clarity and power of these closed cup earphones. They are great for monitoring, DJ's, preliminary mixdown, and many other uses. The main difference of the new version is the improved retail packaging and the velour earpads. The original earpads were a leatherette type, while these new ones are a velour type. In addition, those replacement pads and parts can always be purchased from us directly if you ever need a replacement. We still have customers with headphones 25+ years old who love the fact we support our product with available parts. This is rare in today's electronic era where most items are considered disposable.

As you were looking on the German parent website (www.sennheiser.com), this item is not available yet in the USA (www.sennheiserusa.com). We should be seeing the revised version within the next few months. You have a sharp eye!"

I like these guys!

To any HD25-1 owners who also happen to own a pair of higher-end IEMs (a la Westone UM2/ES2, Shure E4c/E500, UE super.fi 5 Pro/triple.fi 10 Pro, etc.:

Can IEMs get close to (at least imitating) the soundstage that a pair of HD25-1 can provide? It seems like all of the IEMs I've tried sounded in my head and I couldn't favor them even over a pair of supraaurals like my AKG K 81 DJ.

This question might come a bit too soon since the Westone 3's release is imminent (and Ray Samuels remarked that "the sound stage was so big I could never believe it was coming from these cans", but I'm wondering if the $200-300 IEMs can stand their ground in this area as well.

IMO, no. I own HD25's and E500's, and the soundstage in the HD25's is far, far superior.

On certain recordings, the 25 can be downright astounding.

Hi guys! I'm signing up to team 'HD25-1'.

I'm currently running them out of various sources being fed into a NAD C372 standard integrated amplifier. But because of the outstanding sensitivity of these headphones, I get a bit of hiss coming from the headphone socket, even with the volume on the amp all the way down. I've narrowed it down to being the signal from the pre-amp into the power amp. This is fixable on the C372 though, as it has two sets of pre-outs: The 'default' one and another one that has a variable attenuator on it (mostly for hooking into a powered sub etc). I'm using the attenuator to knock the signal (including the hiss) down a bit. The hiss is now gone, woo hoo. I can now enjoy the silence from the headphones when there is any

Pulled the trigger and ordered the HD25-1s a couple of days ago and they arrived yesterday. Only had a few hours with them so it's too soon for a considered review - also I'm totally new to this and don't really think I have the analytical skills or experience of other decent phones to expound profoundly or anything. That said..... (first impressions).....

I'm just loving them so far!

I've only used them un-amped out of my iPod nano (yeah, I know, maybe later...) and can only compare them to the stock buds, Senn cx300s (grotesquely awful with the nano) and V-Moda Vibes. I still think the Vibes are good phones, but they don't have the clarity, the separation of instruments or the detail (in the low end especially) of the HD25s. The Senns are just so much more... engaging? ...musical? ...coherent? I'm not really sure I have the language. Put it this way. I have a long relationship with the Dylan album Blood on the Tracks. For years I just loved it, but I've cared for it it less of late, and it just wasn't giving me the pleasure it used to. I figured maybe I'd just played it too often, but I listened to it again last night through the HD25s and... it was all back! I was tuned into the music again, engaged, just loving it really.

I guess that probably the best thing I can say about these phones is that pretty quickly I wasn't listening to them, I was just listening to the music... and bloody good it sounds too. I'm sure there are plenty here would say that there are phones with better SQ, that the HD25s would be better amped, or that the source could be improved. I've no reason to think that all of those aren't true, but right now it's mission accomplished for me

Congrats marcol! Maybe the hd25's aren't the best thing in resolution etc but as long as it gives the musical pleasure you said it's well worth the money. Especially if you take portability and general toughness in regard!

Thanks, snejk. Worth every penny in my view. About the only bad thing I can find to say is that my ears do get rather warm. I ordered the velour pads today so hopefully they will help with that.

Velours arrived yesterday. Is it just me or are they warmer (sonically, not thermally

)? I thought at first there was just more bass with the velours, but that's not quite right. It's more that it's less punchy and controlled. I've swapped the pads a couple of times and interchanged the foam screens that the sound comes through and I'm sure what I'm hearing is real (and that it's not due to the screens).

I'm pretty sure that's the high impedance version, terminated with a 6.5mm straight plug.
