It gets even better on repeat viewings, because you can fully appreciate all the little details and symbolism laced throughout the early episodes, long before anything is actually made clear. Some people say it's slow in the beginning, but I find the pacing perfect for building up the later episodes, which have a HSQ through the roof.

I started Madlax, the first 4-5 episodes, but never got back to it. I'll try to get to it at some point. People were saying it was a total failure so I didn't bother to try to catch up.

Yeah, that's one of the problems it's been plagued with... there are a surprising number of people with short attention spans who only watched a few episodes, then go around discouraging everybody else from watching it. It's a criminally underrated series, if you ask me. I actually avoided Madlax for a while because of how much bad press I'd heard, but picked up the thinpak just to satisfy my curiosity, and man was I pleasantly surprised. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it ended after only 26 episodes... I could've gone on for much longer.

To give a slight comparison to Noir...

I like Noir for the individual episodes and the strained relationship between Mireille and Kirika, while I like Madlax for the overall story and the growth/development of the individual characters. Music is great in both (it's Kajiura after all) and I'd give Noir the edge in instrumental BGM, and Madlax the edge in insert songs. There's much less action in Madlax until you get towards the end, so don't go into it expecting a big shoot-out nearly every episode like Noir.

Yeah I didn't get discouraged, I just lost track of the show in the midst of many other shows and eventually was reminded of it by some bad press I saw which led me to stay away.

BTW Serial Experiments Lain is a very cool anime as well. I didn't consider it for my top five because I never finished it. There was a syncing problem that I had to solve by running the audio track separately from the video, which was too big of a hassle. Since then, I've gotten a new copy but never bothered restarting it.

Blasphemy! You must go and watch Lain immediately, stopping midway is not acceptable, and may be punished severely, including removal of your connection to the wired.

p.s. Lain will always will be my #1 anime

Top anime ever and only a few books and lunchboxes?!

Just kidding I don't really have much besides the discs themselves for my favorites.

A few books and lunchboxes?! The limited edition boxset on the left is signed by Yasuyuki Ueda and Yo****oshi ABe, the big lunchbox is another limited edition boxset, the two big artbooks are simply amazing, the legit version of the Bootleg CD boxset is pretty much nonexistant outside of YHJ auctions where you have to bid against hardcore Japanese fans, and I've gone as far as to track down Lain doujinshi (non-H). Plus I also have a couple dozen cels from Lain, including 3 close-ups shots of Lain.

Do not doubt my Lain-fanitudeness something or other.

Fitz, I do believe your collection of Serial Experiments Lain paraphernalia may begin to rival that collection of AKG headphones of yours.

I just watched some new anime out tonight/last night.

Tytania: Futuristic space battles, conquering clans, etc. This show was very enjoyable. Graphically pretty good, but not amazing. Characters are typical. The first episode has all the essentials to this genre and I couldn't spot anything too negative. Recommended if you like the genre, I certainly will be watching more. It feels like Last Exile but a space version with a different story.

Kurozuka: Horror mixed with some very brutal samurai action. Feels psychological also. This anime if it continues this path should be quite intense. This genre isn't really my cup of tea, but I'll give it a run. The samurai action itself is worth the watch. This is also directed by Tetsuro who directed Death Note.

some updates with 2nd episodes on a couple animes:

Casshern Sins: continues the beautiful style and landscapes, a bit more story here, but not much info. This was a reasonably powerful emotional episode. I'm no stranger to slow stories (naruto/bleach anyone?) so I'll definitely stick with this one.

Toaru Majutsu no Index: I've already read mixed reviews on this 2nd episode. Some call this a 180 flip and can't stand it, while others feel the action is helping the story heat up, literally. I personally felt a little bit abused by the abruptness of the change, but I didn't dislike it. I enjoyed it. The method of the win was albeit too simple, but it's merely the beginning. Overall good episode, will be tuning in for next week.

I heard this was directed by the same guy that made black lagoon, gungrave and death note. Looks pretty good

Have you seen El Cazador De Bruja yet? I'm guessing this show falls off of most people's radars, it certainly fell off mine until I ran into its name completely by accident on Wikipedia. It's the third series in the intended trilogy of "girls with guns" shows by the director of Noir and Madlax. It's set in a Western setting with a relatively less complex storyline than Noir or Madlax (although it does involve supernaturalism), and it has some great character development, particularly between the two female protagonists. The action is secondary really, some gun fights here and there but not that flashy.

I think I still prefer Madlax to El Cazador De Bruja (the western setting does not appeal as much to me as the wasteland in Madlax) and Noir (by far). I love the track "Maxwell's Witch" a lot though.

Yes, it is. I edited that fact in, but you must have caught my post before I saved the edit.

Vertigo: If I like Madlax I will certainly give it a shot, though I will agree ahead of time with Zorander. Westerns aren't my thing.
