The easy solution, don't play music with vocals on them.

I just got the 770-80s a couple of days ago. They are more fatiguing than my 880s, and the midrange is recessed(though I don't find excessive treble), but on music with good bass(aka, no mp3s), they are superb.

I currently switch between these and my 880's whenever I get bored with the other. I'm also thinking about getting it recabled by headphile. Can anyone who has done it before tell me how big of a difference it makes?

Welcome to the team, one and all

I'm certainly on the team and I'd like to stay on the team. As such, I'm wondering of there is an upgrade to the DT 931. I like a lot of things about this headphone but when there is a lot of high frequency information it falls a little short and seems to distort a bit. Still, it is better than any phone I've heard in this price range and I don't want to sacrifice its detail. I was just wondering if something like the DT 880 would be a step up or a horizontal movement.

Erikzen,

The DT880 offers a somewhat different sound, its more laid back than the DT931, and its slightly slower, but its clearly more refined and in a hifi sense, it is a step up from the DT931.

Unless you want to move completely away from the DT931, I wouldnt quite say it was a direct replacement / upgrade.

Yeah, 880 and 931 are quite different. 880 is smooth and well-balanced while 931 has this funky sound

Maybe try 860?

I've found that the DT770's sound much more balanced when you wear them forward and below center (over your ears) and with the headband about 5 or 10 degrees forward of center.

I suppose you could say I've been 'Team Beyer' since day one...my first pair of 'high end' headphones were my DT 250-80s, close to two years ago now? I'm still loving them as much today as when I first got them, but I'm feeling that upgrade bug hitting me hard of late, so I'm about to try expanding my horizons (Senns? AKG? Grado? Decisions decisions...), as well as upgrading my setup. I'm sure though, that my Beyers will always hold a special place in my heart, as they were the first headphones (or speakers...haven't had much hi-fi experience) that opened up my eyes...er...ears to just how good my music could sound.

I really don't think the vocals on on the dt770s are really that bad.I just got through playing "Uncle Johns Band " by the Greatful Dead a song with alot of 3 and 4 part harmonies and I thought the Beyers sounded really good .Not as up front as my Grado 125s but still really nice.

Just got my DT 770-80 yesterday from Guitar center. I had listen to them
before plugged into there iMAc but they just did not sound great out of it.
So I went back with my ipod -> mypower lineout -> SR-71 and thats when the
magic happened.

I find the seperation on my 650's better but I love the bass on the 770's.
I do find that at times the bass intrudes on the midrange just a bit and the
770's are very unforgiving when it comes to bad recordings.

Anyway they're a keeper and the isolation is great at work in my computer
lab.

I never realized this but I guess I'm a basshead of some sort. With my classic dynamic-electrostatic phones (they shall remain anonymous in this thread) I missed the bass. My DT880s are better in this regard but I still miss some bass.

No I'm getting the first hours with my DT770s. Now we're talking bass.

I have to say this is great fun - though probably a little fatiguying (is that a word?) in extended listening. I bought these for films but am just trying them with music for fun.

Da bass!!11

My foray into the world of headphones will be with the Beyer DTX900 I currently have on order. These will be my first phones that cost me more than $30. After visiting these forums for a little while, I fear that high quality audio may become an addiction of sorts. I hope I don't end up blowing too many paychecks on equipment...

Joking aside, it is a real possibility. Less than a year ago I did not understand why would someone have more than one portable and one non-portable pair of phones. And amps - what are they for?

Now I'm at five pairs of phones and two amps. But I'm recovering, I truly am.

Wow, nice deal and welcome to the club. But beware, next thing you know, you'll want to upgrade the amp, the source, the cables and ......... Run away from this place.
