Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
I have it set to the loudest I would listen to actual music. I went ahead and just did the measurements at 0db gain and it still worked out. The windows gain is digital anyway so there is nothing to gain (no pun intended) from using it.- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
I’ve started experimenting with room measurements using the UMIK-1. I’ve found that the sensitivity is quite low for my normal listening volume. I am getting headroom readings in the 30db range. Are the results more useable if the digital gain in windows is turned up or is it ok to use the...- simplefi

HD800 has been proven to work well for speaker virtualization and is what Smyth Research recommends for the Realiser (along w Stax). Open back seem to work the best IME.- simplefi

Excellent condition cable for HD800 series headphones that is just over 8 ft. This was a great upgrade over the stock cable; very musical. I recently acquired this cable but it is just barely long enough for my new setup so it is up for sale while I replace it with a longer cord. Shipping is...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
Very interesting observations with your 8XX. I picked up some HD800s to experiment with Impulcifer and my findings are similar to yours. Localization is excellent, as is technical performance. My headphones plot is a little "hairier" than your 8XX but not as bad as the Anandas. Not sure how...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
Is it possible to output HRIRs in a desired sample rate that isn't 48khz without having to resample? Seems like Impulcifer only outputs at 48khz unless the --fs parameter is used to resample to another rate. I'm trying to record HRIRs directly using my desired sample rate.- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
For Impulcifer, lower headroom just means your signal to noise ratio is higher. You want your intended signal (sweep) to be as high as possible relative to the noise (ambient, background, hiss from equipment, etc) and turning up the volume and/or gain are both ways to achieve this. But as you...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
If I am understanding this right, is this just generating the headphone compensation EQ as a separate parametric EQ in EQ-APO? In that case running this with a measurement using "--no_headphone_compensation" should sound the same as a normal Impulcifer measurement. Running it as you are, it is...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
One thing I found to keep in mind for getting good measurements is to be completely still when measuring your speakers. It is very easy to involuntarily move slightly. For example, if you shift your head or neck position by a couple mm, it'll be equivalent to having a different headshape by...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
I get around 8-12db headroom, sometimes a little more or less. I make sure the room is quiet (no fans, or other ambient noise) and adjust the gains so that the signal LEDs are blinking at about the same rate for both channels. I found that if you back off the gain to the point where you arent...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
I have the same interface and mics and my results are similar to yours. My mics are more matched than yours it seems but I wouldnt worry about not having the gain knobs at the exact same level for both channels. I adjust them to where they are more or less matched and don't give too much weigh...- simplefi

Glad to know the Ananda's work well. The results I am getting on the HD595 are adequate but I am sure they could also be better. Here are my mics. With the foam cups, I get about the same placement as lowdown. Without the foam, I can get as least a flush mount. I'll be trying out both. Looks like I have a bit or experimentation to do.- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
Right now the deepest I can get the mics is just about flush with the ear canal entrance, or maybe 1mm in. The casing makes it too tight to go beyond that. Do you think that a deeper insertion would benefit in this case? Also, what was your impression of the Masters vs non-masters series...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
Good to know that the wings aren't necessary to get good measurements. I was thinking that the extra silicone material was either holding the mic at a more favorable position just outside the ear canal or possibly damping the mic's FR. With the wings off, the round silicone casing is large...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
I know I've seen other transducers (buttkicker?) that are meant to mount to office chairs and include a clamp for the center post. Since you can set custom filters in voicemeeter I've been wanting to experiment with whether a low pass or full range transducer is better with HRIRs. Running the...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
That's the one I'm using-compared to other low cost transducers, I found that the Clark is lacking in low bass output. It only starts generating output above 30Hz but the tradeoff is that it goes up to 800Hz which I found to be a decent range for audio purposes. As for amps, any appropriate...- simplefi

Even a low cost transducer can add to the experience so keep us posted on your impressions. Great idea with using it with a guitar, I hadn't thought of that. Just be aware that many transducers are intended for a LFE channel and expect a low pass filter. Low E on a guitar is around 80 Hz...- simplefi

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization
Turns out you can use voicemeeter for independent outputs and it is relatively straightforward, I dont know why I didnt try this before. You just run the EQ-APO configurator and if you have voicemeeter installed, it will show the 3 voicemeeter outputs as available sound devices. You just need...- simplefi
