Radiohead: Harry Patch (In Memory Of)
Radiohead just released a track for a small fee ($1.70 USD) in memory of the oldest living verified WWI soldier. Apparently he was somewhat of a UK icon. I just grabbed the track (Radiohead :: Harry Patch (In memory of)) and am giving it a listen now. Sublime, epic, soulful and personal. What... -
Exposure to new music: List the best from your country!
I'm trying to become more exposed to the great artists from around the world and I figure this may be a fun way to source some out! The idea is to choose the top in each category. This is not necessarily a personal choice but rather what is likely universally held by your country based on sales... -
Yuja Wang, the next big thing?
Her album was released today. Here are some links of her performing. She has speed. The Youtube clip isn't good enough to grade much else, but she is technically proficient! YouTube - Yuja Wang plays the Flight of the Bumble-Bee (Vol du Bourdon) - medici.tv Yuja Wang - Sonatas & Etudes -
Great Lake Swimmers
I've been a fan for over a year now and just recently picked up Ongiara on vinyl. WOW! Apparently it's limited, but I was able to just walk into a local music store and grab it (though I haven't ever seen it there before). Great folk music with a rock tinge. Think Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine... -
Calling all video editing gurus!
A colleague of mine is putting together a really cool Christmas presentation for what is known as "Jeopardy Rounds." For all you docs out there, you know well what rounds are all about. For Christmas, each year the staff at the hospital I work at puts on Jeopardy Rounds where teams compete...- Zanth

How much is a CD worth today?
I was in a high-end audio store which also stocks a decent selection of music and I grabbed a Bluenote release of Joe Henderon's Page One. Included in the release was a copy of the CD. Nothing fancy, it was in a plain envelope with the nicely printed CD. I was quite excited by this and mentioned... -
The way it SHOULD be done!
Last night I picked up a present - My Morning Jacket's new album. So far nothing spectacular except excellent music in a format I enjoy - LP. Oh but wait! What is this? Is that a CD of the LP slipped in there? Oh it is?!! Well well, all for the price of a regular LP? How can this be? I've... -
Sign Up! Head-fi's 2008 Christmas CD Exchange!
Sorry for the delay folks. I guess with running the headphone programme, dealing with the new job and having been burned last year on the exchange (of the 5 years I've run it - or is it six now? - I've been burned twice!) this has not been at the forefront of my mind. Regardless, 'Tis the...- Zanth

Vintage RS-1's: What does the word vintage mean to you?
I've been seeing a fair amount of FS ads here and on Ebay regarding "Vintage" RS-1's. I scratch my head when seeing the images of 2 year old headphones with the "buttons" with grand claims they are "vintage!" Perhaps I'm overly pedantic but I figure that for most folks, vintage means "really...- Zanth

Current status of the loan programme
Right now there are two sets of headphones in distribution with two more sets on their way. The GS-1000's have met with wide acceptance and I believe we are on the 5th or perhaps 6th person to borrow them. The SR-60's have endured the most travel time back and forth from Canada to the US and...- Zanth

iPod Touch 2G - Finally a capable PDA?
I'm in a very interesting position at work, they need to spend money and they are letting me buy buy buy! First on the agenda was a nice new 17" Macbook Pro, then a ginormous ultrasharp from Dell (crappy that I need an adapter ) and to round that up, I would really like a PDA. I could go with an...- Zanth

Garbage In, Garbage Out - Why aren't Head-fiers obsessively posting about awesome recordings?
The title sums up my feelings. There have been more than a few threads popping up lately about how albums sound pretty bad lately and how there is no hope. Lossy online files are the future and there is no turning back... I've been reading a lot lately about recording quality, recording... -
Track your Burn-in!

Lowering the noise floor of a Melos?
I've noticed that my Melos has a higher noise floor than the EAR HP4 (which is pretty well dead silent, as good as any solid stage amp I've heard) and I want to figure out a means of lowering it. Roger Hebert of Wyetech Labs had installed a switch which grounds the unit or adds a 50 ohm...- Zanth

Just when you've finally made it to Summit-fi...
...you are told that you MUST sell your gear. You must downsize just as you are settling into a life-time of sonic bliss. In downsizing, can you match your $$$$ rig? Some assumptions: "High-end" unfortunately means pricey, so the reason for having to sell off could range from monetary...- Zanth

Leopard Time Machine...does it = Norton Ghost?
I am going to need to expand my Mac's HD very soon. I have a 100 gb 7200 and I'm upgrading to a 320 drive. If I use Time Machine to back up my current drive to the new 320, and then swap them, will it work? Is the backup like ghosting, or can it be configured to work this way? I don't want...- Zanth

After nearly 2 years without vinyl...I have a new cart!
It has been a tough 22 odd months. My cartridge was dying and I had to avoid playing vinyl as much as possible as to protect my wonderful black discs. The last time I played vinyl using my cart was sometime last summer and frequent playback...sometime the summer before that. Friday I...- Zanth
