Orthodynamic Roundup
Quote: I remember reading somewhere that speaker frequency response is measured 1 meter from the speaker as well. Just a guess but I'd bet that the drivers in just about any headphone would measure as a tweeter at 1 meter.- scompton

Orthodynamic Roundup
Quote: I finally got a change to test the ECR-500. I also used the tones on this site http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_sinebursts20-200.php because I wanted to test 20Hz as well. Those tones seem more accurate than others I found. They seem to match the tones you posted were others...- scompton

Orthodynamic Roundup
Quote: I'm teleworking today so I check it tomorrow. It's pretty rare with any headphone to here 30Hz without turning up the volume. I tend to listen at low levels.- scompton

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
I doubt the HE-6 would be driven well out of the headphone jack. One really pushed my 65W Realistic STA-2200. With 15W - 20W, you'd probably have to run them off the speaker taps.- scompton

Orthodynamic Roundup
I cut small pieces of carpet tape and essentially made a ring on the baffle. It's OK, but I really need something a little better. The tape I used isn't very good and the pads don't really stay on. I generally have to readjust them every time I listen and they frequently fall off as I pick up...- scompton

AKG K240 Sextett--Grado'd AKG?
Quote: I didn't send him a Sextett but I did send 4 orthos when he sent a request for them. I let him keep them for a while too so he could listen to them. I sent him my Fostex T30 which is my favorite headphone and pretty much irreplaceable because it's so rare. In comparison...- scompton

what makes some amp better than others?
It's been my experience that most amps have way too much gain, even for moderately hard to drive headphones like vintage orthos. With most amps I've tried, I'm lucky if I get the volume knob past 8 o'clock, even if there is a low gain setting. Even portable amps supposedly designed for low...- scompton

Stax SRD-7 transformer box question
That's what I felt like saying, but I only own normal bias Stax. I find it hard to believe that they can sound good at under half the bias voltage.- scompton

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
Quote: The biggest car I've ever been in was a 73 Pontiac Brougham that my father bought when I was in my late teens. The bench seats were 6 feet wide judging by the fact that I'm 5' 11" and could comfortably lay down on them. It's the only car I've driven that I had problems...- scompton

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
Quote: I do own a K-Mart Stax SR-3 clone. It's mind boggling to me that K-Mart ever sold such a thing. My experiences with K-Mart have been horrible. I found out later from a coworker who had worked here way though college and K-Mart's corporate HQ that the 2 I lived near were...- scompton

VA / MD / DC meet on Saturday, July 28, 2012
I forgot, I do have a "new" headphone to bring. I've had a vintage Sony ECR-500 electret for a couple of years, but without an transformer box to drive it. When I mentioned it on the ortho thread, waulta kindly sent me one for free. These aren't your typical electrets, they have bass. They...- scompton

I didn't know about the Pure i20. I'll look into it, although I'll still probably go the Airport Express route. Six months ago I replace my music computer. It was an XP machine that I bought shortly after SP1 came out. After 5 years, I still consider the PC new I had to get a new PC at...- scompton

Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread
If you don't need portable, I'd go with a computer anyway, or an Airport Express, especially since your library is too big for even an upgraded iPod. I've been thinking of getting a couple of Airport Expresses to stream music to various points in the house from my Mac Mini. How are you...- scompton

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
My wife would never let them in the house. I saw some Kenwood towers at a thrift store two weeks ago and looked them up from my iPhone. They had phenomenal reviews but my wife wouldn't had let me walk out the thrift store with them. They were 4.5 feet tall.- scompton

Top of the range headphones for opera
If he can stand IEMs, they are better than noise canceling on a plane. Quite passages are not really listenable in loud environments like planes with noise canceling or IEMs. Of the IEMs I own, the Klipsch X5 and Fisher DBA-02 are very good for classical. The Ety ER-4 has a good rep for...- scompton
