I definitely heard improvements when I replaced a generic $5 USB cable made for printer with a $35 99.9% copper + gold plated connectors USB cable made for hi-fi. I have no experience with other USB cables, however I doubt there will be much improvements comparing $35 and $1000 USB cables. 

I have a DAC/AMP unit, it is wider but looks almost exactly like the one bixby has. The RCAs are output. It even came with fully balanced output (mine has TRS instead of XLRs though) which I didnt even care as I was not expecting balanced rig anytime soon.  

Westone 2 has pretty wide soundstage for an IEM, doesnt feel far behind HD600s at all. I dont know how HD600s fare against other headphones, but they are definitely not as wide as HD555s.

I do watch anime, and listen to some of the OSTs as well (Angel Beats! OSTs are my fav), and generally they sound great through my HD600s. Instrument separation is pretty good in general, but somehow anime Jpop songs sound blended in comparison to other genres (I suspect it's the recordings...

My M3 just arrived, plugged HD600s into it. OMG!! HD600s became a beast, wide soundstage, very nice instrument separation, bass became so deep and tight. Now I believe that these seriously need a good amp to sing.

You can get it new from an authorized dealer for <300 at ebay. Search for razordogdeals' listing, and make a reasonable offer.
