okay so i have new cans and portable amp coming in soon.
Senn HD545 and Xtra-X1

is an Ipod's line out better than zune's headphone out when you use an amp?
is there much of a difference or is it near the same

i currently have a zune.
for people who own zune's, what are your experiences with using the zune with an amp using the headphone out??? would you recommend i get an ipod video with line out dock instead?

EDIT: i read somewhere that on the zune it is better to keep the volume low, and use the amp to add the additional volume necessary, any thoughts?

Woot Zune 30 --- SR-71 -- hd600/grado SR60
Ipod Mini LO -- SR-71 -- headphones

I like my first generation Ipod Mini line-out a lot lot better than the Zune 30 headphone out. Although both use the beloved Wolfson chip, the ipod mini's line-out is noticeably better.

How about the iPods headphone out? Does that sound identical to it's line out?

Can anyone recommend me a cheap starter amp? I've never used an amp before, but am interested now in spending a small bit of money on one.

I was looking at these two on TTVJ:

a cheap starter amp?
woah those are really high priced starters (for my budget anyways)

i don't know what i'm talking about, but just from reading headfi, i think the general recommendation is the mini^3 at $125, you can get someone like grasshopper or minister x to make one for you. there is a grasshopper website.

also for the $200-$300 range there is the tomahawk and the hornet... both highly refered to.

here is one non-headfi site i found for reviewing amps in the $100 range
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1170578
it has good info on where to purchase these amps, as well as photos.

While I think the Zune sounds good and does well amped, I don't think it beats the iPod lineout. I currently have both, and I prefer the iPod's lineout.

I've noticed the Zune doesn't reproduce deep frequencies as well. For instance, the heartbeat at the beginning of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal buzzes like clipping. It's not flabby distortion, but it's also not correct. Whereas the iPod lineout produces a deep tight beat. You can actually hear the same thing using the headphone out of both DAPs.

On the other hand, the Zune has less background noise than the iPod.

Get a Cheap Cmoy honestly.
They have the better SQ with much less worry than throwing a $200 amp in with everything else. Plus, easily replaceable batteries will save you on long trips.
