The relative EQability is: The Zen is better.

Hmm.... I hold different opinion from yours, at least for me I can hear the different where the Zen Micro sound better than iPod mini.

iPod 4G will be different case, with a different sound signature, though I still prefer the sound of Zen Micro, which is more focus.

Save yourself the time. The iShuffle sux. First of all it is way too damn small (storage size). Come on 1gb for $150? I always knew that apple products were expensive but this is just a little bit too much having in mind that the iShuffle has no equalizer no screen and is pretty much nothing more than a thumb drive that requires drivers in order to use it. Even if 1gb or 512mb is for you then you should really look at the MSI players. If nothing else they at least have a screen and it's a color led ... Mac has proved time and again that they simply cannot make good products on a budget. Too bad.

Hmm... There's also a reason why I never use the ATH-EM7 to conduct any tests

I do want to change to a better headphone, but....

[Edited] Remove first sentence. Using same headphone, so both players under same condition, thus the statement remain the same: Zen Micro sound better.

You'll definitly want the zen micro because it supports replaceable batteries. The carbon and the mini don't. They will dissappoint you on 10h trips. The micro is just better in general too imo.

Or, you could get some 20 or 30 ft headphone wires. You can leave a wire trail leading back to the stereo too... so you'll never forget where it is.

I've owned both the Mini and the Micro for a time...

Sound: Micro is a bit better, more with its EQ capabilities. With EQ off, the Micro is still a tad better.

Buttons/usability: Mini, by a pretty wide margin. There is a tendency for the Micro to skip and the sensitivity levels don't help much. The Mini was simply easier to use in general.

Software: A wash, IMO. I never had any problem with either the Micro or Mini setups, so I won't comment.

Battery: Micro -- doesn't seem to drain as much when "off", though the extra battery didn't get used as much as I thought it would. In general, I'd vote for the Carbon in this category just on general principle.

Of the two, mainly because of the usability factor, I vote for the Mini. But after all this is said and done I wasn't happy enough with either to keep it -- here's to hoping the next generation can give us the usability of the Mini, the sound of the Micro, and the battery life of the Carbon.

I bought a Carbon as well and would probably believe it to be the best of these three...except it refused to work. I mean *refused.* So I took it back and bought the Micro instead.
