Now I'm getting around to some of my other choices:

Rat Scabies - The Damned

A killer drummer that most people have ignored.

Charlie Watts - The Stones

Minimalist, but always on time. The glue that made the Stones survive. Who else can say that?

+1 and he's a very good jazz drummer as well.

As Jagger likes to say "Charlie's good night, ain't he?"

In no particular order except the last being my favorite:

Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic and Neal Morse solo)
Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree and tours with King Crimson)
Neal Peart (Rush for technical precision)
Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard, Genesis, Fates Warning and Big Big Train)
Bill Bruford (the man played for the holy trinity of classic prog rock Yes, King Crimson and toured with Genesis in 1975 (take a listen to the live version of "Cinema Show" off the Live Box album).

Gavin Harrison (jazz/rock)
Neil Peart (rock)
Billy Cobham (jazz/fusion
Bill Bruford (prog rock)
Joey Baron (jazz)

A video of Joey Baron. I think the studio version off of the album Mostly Coltrane is better, but this is still quite good:

Ritchie Hayward of Little Feat
Billy Cobham
James Brown's drummer in the era covered by the In the Jungle Groove album (don't know his name)
David Garibaldi (Tower of Power)
And you gotta love Neal Peart
