YOUR Top 10 Albums
Oct 31, 2011 at 9:39 PM Post #196 of 252
No way. You've got plenty of good music there. I actually have a friend who has been doing studio work for 40 years now. He has everything you could want as far as vintage hi-fi goes...and he doesn't listen to music anymore.

Last time I visited him I asked what he'd been listening to lately. His response was 'Nothing. Nothing modern is any good and I've listened to the good stuff too much.' He was referring to the recordings.

I worry I'll end up like this some day...but until you get burned out on them stick to the oldies.

Oh, and it should be worth mentioning that he's blind and has 'super ears'. Seriously, the guy is amazing.

In ABCD order:

Devo - Q: Are We Not Men?  A: We are Devo!
Isis - Panopticon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Radiohead - The Bends
Rush - Moving Pictures
The Clash - The Clash (U.S. Version)
The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Tool - Lateralus
U2 - Achtung Baby

Man, I need to listen to more modern stuff . . .

too hard, and some of the stuff I am about to list I dont listen to anymore, but they were big deal when I did. I would have problems listing my 10 fav bands, not to mention 10 albums without repeating a single band.

in no particular order: (artist - band)
  • The Flower Kings - Space Revolver
  • Gazpacho - Missa Atropos
  • King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
  • Pain of Salvation - BE
  • The beatles -  Abbey Road
  • Genesis -  Selling England by the pound
  • The Who - Quadrophenia
  • Dream threater -  Metropolis II: Scenes from a Memory
  • Marillion - Marbles
  • Yes - Flragile
  • Rush - 2112
  • Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick
  • Roine Stolt - Hydrophonia

My most listened albums at last.fm tells a different story

Haven't been here in some time :)  Think it's time to reflect and see if my tastes have changed...

Wow, this is incredibly TOUGH!!
10 only? *gulp*
1 artist limit? *gulp* *gulp*

In chronological order:

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis - 1972
In A Glass House - Gentle Giant - 1973
Relayer - Yes - 1974
Permanent Waves - Rush - 1980
Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush - 1985
Lifes Rich Pageant - R.E.M. - 1986
Reading, Writing, Arithmetic - Sundays - 1989
Heaven Or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins - 1990
Washing Machine - Sonic Youth - 1995
OK Computer - Radiohead - 1997

Without the 1 artist rule there'd be an additional album a piece for Rush and Genesis
smily_headphones1.gif

But really, 10 is really much too hard. It doesn't tell enough about myself! No room for Soundgarden, Trans Am, Prince, The Smiths, Metallica, Godspeed You Black Emperor and more!

20 would have been more fair.
25????

Ok... maybe a little...

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis - 1972
In A Glass House - Gentle Giant - 1973
Relayer - Yes - 1974
Permanent Waves - Rush - 1980
Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush - 1985
Lifes Rich Pageant - R.E.M. - 1986
Heaven Or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins - 1990
OK Computer - Radiohead - 1997
NYC Ghosts & Flowers - Sonic Youth - 2000
Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn - Do Make Say Think - 2003

And it's harder than ever to just pick 10! So many great albums - Guided By Voices alone could easily take 5 spots in the top 20. R.E.M.s Document and Genesis' Selling England By The Pound are also worthy.  Then there's Simple Minds' classic New Gold Dream, the recent Church album Untitled #23 (which has a couple of weak tracks but the remainder is some of the best music they've made in 30 years!).  Rush would certainly get a few more slots along with U2, Pavement, King Crimson,  Aimee Mann.

I'm sort of surprised to not see some of my top 10 on anyone's lists:

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
Sonic Youth - Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star (tied with 'Daydream Nation')
Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions of a Knife

Beck - Sea Change
Fugazi - In on the Killtaker (tied with 'End Hits', actually)
Ass Ponys - Electric Rock Music
Godflesh - Hymns
The Geraldine Fibbers - Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home

Have you guys not heard some of these or am I just way over-rating some of them?

Opeth - Damnation
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Dream Theater - Train of Thought
Josh Groban - Closer (with bonuses)
Avishai Cohen - Gently Disturbed

... others to be discovered, I'm too young to be sure. I think they will be far away from metal, they've got to be very musical, maybe they wait for me somewhere in contemporary jazz or classical.
Anyway, I think within 10 years those above are going to be replaced too. I grow up, and I'm not the same teenager metalhead I used to be. Now I seek complexion and rich emotions in music.

It's quite strange that from what I see in this topic, most of the people who write here (and consider themselves as ones who understand in music), prefer some really simple albums. I don't want to mention specific albums/artists, but they are simple harmony with a nice melody and nothing more. Or even worse...

It's a top 10 - so you may not see massive diversity with a lot of people.  It's hard limiting it down to favourite 10 only.  If you listed top 25 or 30, mine would have changed dramatically with inclusion of some classical albums, folk, indie, more blues, some soul etc.  Not fair to make a judgement call on the posters who've so far listed when 10 albums may only make up 1-5% of their total collection .....

There like friends, they don't have to be smart to be entertaining.

There is something to be said for what is actually 'left out' of a piece of music.....

As it's been said, it's really hard to narrow it down.....especially under the 10 albums/10 different artists rule....and then throw in a mix of genres....I'd rewrite mine 50 times before posting it.

But, much of what I'd include....has already been mentioned

.  This is a great thread for expanding one's appetite for good music though!
