I don't get it either.

The only think i could point at was the fact that it is not PCI2.1 compliant since it doesn't have 2 notches/keys in the pci interface. But so doesn't the AV710.

Massamune: Cards based on the C-Media CMI8768 or 8738 are hardly any better than modern standard onboard-sound codecs. You'd better go for a proper Envy24-based card, if you're interested in better audio performance.

Hello, newbie here, I was just wondering if anyone has any newer news/experiance with this card since this thread was started back on 3-16-2005. I am currently upgrading my semi-HTPC setup which currently runs a Chaintech AV-710 with Klipsch Ultra 5.1 speakers. I am interested in the fact that this card can compress every signal coming out of your computer to an AC3 signal as well as has it's own sound processor (offloading some CPU usage).

As a side note, I use my setup in 5.1 mode constantly so the wolfsen DAC on the chaintech card is pretty much worthless to me since its only for stereo. The actual 5.1 analog output on the chaintech card is better than my Realteck ALC650 (onboard) but the chaintech's Via VT1616 DAC sure doesn't feel like the night/day difference I thought it would be. So I have been looking at alternatives (Creative not being one of them... unless their next card zenith or whatever it is called is awesome... although i doubt it).

That AC3 encoding sure is nice if you need/want it, but in terms of plain analog outputs this card would be hardly better than your AV-710. For good analog outputs look at something like the Revo 5.1 (which does not have AC3 encoding, but this would be superfluous anyway due to the presence of 6 good-quality analog outs without any additional data reduction [which AC3 encoding would imply]; IMHO AC3 encoding is only needed when the 5.1 analog out == "teh suck").

Its interesting though because it has Dolby Live! encodering (a.k.a. realtime AC3 encoding). That alone could make this card worth it to people who want to do surround-sound gaming over the digital connection and don't have a SoundStorm nForce board. Its otherwise crap though.

i did try and search before i asked this and i know that

a) this thread is very old

and

b) that this card sucks for analogue output

but could i use this card for the following:

at the moment i don't have a 5.1 receiver but am planning to buy one in the nearish future and would like DDL encoding for future compatability.

in the short term i want to output to a DAC and then to amp/headphone amp and just wanted to check that this could do the same job as the av710 could do (i.e. bit perfect streaming) but then in the future could be done with a processor/receiver with the added benefits of DDL?
