Thanks Old Pa. Unfortunately, I couldn't find this CD in any of the online stores that ship to my place but I'll keep it in mind when I frequent my local cd stores again.

I have to apologize that I completely forgot about this thread. The Cd arrived some time ago and it's wonderful. Again, thanks for the recommendation. I'll probably order something from his website again before long.

My favourites have been mentioned already, but here are a couple more that get play.

Oscar Peterson - Night Train
Duke Ellington - Money Jungle

Besides the usual Bill Evans recommendations, this one I like a lot. One of the best recordings I've heard too. Great thread!

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio - Misty

Hey! How nice to see this thread resurrected again. I'm glad you like the Billy Taylor CD. Seems to me he should be better known than he is.

I wanted to ask you -- was the CD autographed like it indicated it would be on his web site?

If you like the trio recording, you might also like this one: Solo

Happy listening!

Now that you mention it, it is signed. I didn't even notice it, very cool!

Thanks for the new recommendation, too. Actually, I was looking for some more of his somewhat hymn-like and hope-inducing song qualities. Do you know which of his Cds would be suited for that? I really liked that "I wish to be free" free mp3 sample and the more melody-driven tracks on the Leningrad Cd. I'm a sucker for pleasant and uplifiting harmonies in a jazz package.

Thanks for the pic! That's really cool. I'm jealous -- actually had the chance to see him live a couple of times, but never had the chance to ask him to autograph a CD.

By your description of what you like about his playing, this one might be more to your taste --

It has some more hymn-like tunes on it. It's a nice CD, but personally I don't like it as much as "Solo" that I referenced above. And of course, "White Nights in Leningrad" is my all time fav.

He released an lp many years ago called "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free". You may like that if you can find it in an old record shop somewhere. IIRC, that also has some of those kinds of tunes. But the sound quality will be a little dated compared to the CD's we're talking about.

Happy Listening!

Thanks again! I'll remember these two CDs.

Bobo Stenson on a CD seems to always guarantee a certain level of quality, but his own trio albums are superb. Serenity is one of my all time favourites, although War Orphans and the new one Goodbye are almost its equal.

There are many excellent recordings suggested so far but one big one
was missed.I am surprised that The Vince Guaraldi Trio was not mentioned.
A Boy Named Charlie Brown should be on everyone's short list.

Geri Allen's "In the Year of the Dragon" (with Paul Motian & Charlie Haden) is a good one.

Hear, hear! I don't care whether people claim it's only jazz-pop. Vince Guaraldi produces a magisterial and enduring set of tunes that will continue to resonate in people's memories of Christmas. Indeed, "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown" continues to be a cartoon satire ahead of its time, with its cutting denunciations of commercialism and pretentiousness balanced by genuine faith.
