I think most of us agree that almost all players currently available for purchase have many things we'd like to see an improvement on. Tell me about some of things you want to see in your IDEAL music player. Focus here is music.

Feel free to indulge in wild audio fantasies.

I'll kick it off:

1. LINE OUT - I believe the LACK of this one feature causes most Head-Fiers to wail and gnash their teeth everytime a nice new player is released. I'm sorry, but even the iPod requires a specialized LOD. Why is it so hard, like the old PDCPs, to just include a 3.5mm TRS jack for line-out?

2. Battery Life - Every player should have a battery life like the Cowon D2.

3. High Quality Chassis - I'd pay extra just to have a higher quality glass/plastic screen and scratch-resistant body without having visit bestskinsever.com. A metal chassis would be nice too. Too many players these days have a throwaway feel about them.

4. Digital Output - If I had to choose, I'd prefer electrical (via a 3.5mm Mono TRS), because opticals don't bend very well, and we're talking about a portable application here.

5. A2DP Bluetooth - Connect to a Bluetooth DAC like the Chordette Gem. 'Nuff Said.

6. Environment Mic - I know this sounds far out; but imagine if your player had a small built-in mic, and a "Mute" button that would instantaneously pause your music and let you hear through the mic. This is not totally nuts because:
i. Sometimes when you have to pull out your IEMs really quickly to talk or respond to someone, the resulting vacuum created when it "pops" out can be uncomfortable or even painful.
ii. Some people take ages to get their IEMs to seal properly, and pulling them out means having to re-fit them. This applies to fast-expanding foamies too.

7. >32GB Flash Memory - I can buy a 128GB thumbdrive, 64GB SD Card, but not a PDP with the same capacity. Ridiculous.

8. Test-tone Generator - 20Hz - 20Khz, and digital pitch pipe. Godsend for musicians. And since it's got a microphone, why not incorporate it for tuning?

Okay, I can probably think of more if I sit here all night.
But let's see what else there is! Ideas, anyone?

Alright - within reason.

Clip SQ or better
Rockbox EQ
Line-out
32GB flash memory or more
Good build quality
FLAC/ALAC support
ID3 and folder browsing
20+ hours of battery life

From here, two different sides of me diverge!
First would be...
Touch-screen
Wi-fi
Touch-like App store
3" or larger screen
4+ hours of video playback
Second...
Tactile buttons
Small size

An extra feature I'd like would be bluetooth support like the P2, where you can pretty much keep your phone in your pocket all the time, talk through the mic (so I'd like that feature as well), and listen through your headphones.

NW-HD5, 3mm thicker, 240GB HD, AAC/HE-AAC support... and it will feature 50+ hours of battery life just because 240gb hd power requirements are lower than of 20gb used in nw-hd5.

Doesn't that mean it HAS to be an iPod?
Would Apple allow other players to use the coverflow interface, have ALAC support, and integrate with iTunes?

Long battery life
No larger than a nano or fuse
User replaceable battery
32gb flash minimum
SD or microSD card expansion
true line out jack
standard usb connect - no proprietary dock
choice of ID3 or folder navigation
SQ at least as good as the Clip

ability to use the screen as a e-book reader while listening to music

SDHC expansion
Support for FLAC
Gapless playback
>50 hours battery life
Excellent sound quality, of course.

It is entirely in COWON's ability to make a player like this, as well. Such a shame companies don't seem to give a damn.

4.5 x 3" touchscreen
120gb flash memory
48hr battery life
rockbox ready (although with all this who need it)
12 band parametric EQ
optical out, coax out
PDF ready
wireless music transfers
24bit/96k/hz audio
gapless playback
decent output caps for analogue line out
1/4" headphone jack that changes to mini when you need it
chameleon skin so you can change the colour whenever you get bored
anti-glare coating on the screen
midi control interface to control my home studio via bluetooth

the list could go oin for ever, but I guess I would want it to have a streamlined interface as well LOL
