Silly me, i haven't even noticed that the Akg K545 does have detachable cable
I have to say that i find it odd that some say the M50x is slightly different to the M50's since people who work for Audio Technica have say'd that there is nothing different with them except the detachable cord. I was mostly referring to what Tyll Hertsens say'd about them. http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/legend-continues-audio-technica-ath-m50x

I think you should check out the Beyerdynamic DT770 they are well liked headphones, They have slightly similar sound signature with the M50x.
You should also check the Ultimate Ears 6000 they have detachable cable and go dirt cheap. Downside is that you can't get replacement ear pads, they offer a bit more balanced sound with pronounced bass. I think they are discontinued but you can still get them. Can somebody verify if they are discontinued?
