Using a ASUS Xonar ST sound card with integrated headphone amp. The headphone amp is rated to drive up to 600 ohms.

Looking to pair the sound card up with some Beyerdynamics headphones (DT880's or DT990's, haven't decided).

Leaning towards the 600 ohm versions to maximize the potential of the headphone amp but have some concerns after reading feedback on forums. Apparently, the amp on the sound card is not that great and people are having trouble getting volume at that high level.

Question is: should I play it safe and get the 250 ohm Beyerdynamics?

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm curious as to where you've heard that, and what heapdhones they were using?

It's a good amp with a good amount of power. There are plenty of threads asking this same question and the answer seems to always be that it has enough for the 600 Ohm.

Yes the stx are more than powerfull enough for the 250 and 600 ohm beyers. But if you are smart get the 250 so you can use a portable amp at times aswell.
