I currently have the Essence ST. Really like using it. I'm thinking of getting the Xonar H6 but I'm not too technical and really don't understand what all the numbers mean on the Asus website. I use headphones most of the time. My question is how big of an upgrade is the Xonar H6 on the Essence ST if I'm only using headphones and not loud speakers or external speakers?

The Xonar H6 has nothing to do with headphone audio on the Essence ST, so adding the Xonar H6 will not change the Essence ST headphone audio.
Might be better to upgrade headphones (sell off current headphones for cash).
 
Changing the op-amps (operation amplifiers) on the Essence ST can affect (improve?) headphone audio.
