Xonar DG volume level

When the Mixer is set to the default 76/100, the visualizer shows songs reaching +20db. Does that mean it's boosting the digital signal? I thought music was not supposed to exceed 0db.

If the digital sample levels were actually hitting +20dB FS there would be a huge amount of clipping distortion which would be blindingly obvious.



You're referring to the visualization which is shown in this video? It does not say that the scale is referenced to digital full scale (FS), so if you don't hear egregious clipping at +20dB, then 0dB on the graph probably does not mean 0dBFS. Even if it was referenced to 0dBFS, a graph which is split into multiple frequency bands like that does not actually represent the digital sample level and is not what you should use to judge the gain needed.
