xDSD Gryphon: birth of a ‘head-fi’ legend

This tech stuff is going over my head. Will this work with Senn HD-660 S2? I understand there won’t be a fully balanced signal, etc. - but power-wise, will it suffice for a portable amp?
I literally used this combo (660S v1) as my travel setup (back when I traveled for work). It's a great paring and the 660s, while they perform better with more juice, are perfectly happy playing on the Gryphon.

Finally tested the Gryphon with the HD660S2.

Plenty of power and I couldn't reach to a 100 without blowing my ears apart. Sounds satisfying and the bass is probably the best of the HD 6 series.

I was thinking of selling the Gryphon since it is not been used in recent times. Was also in talk with someone.

Then I listened to them again last night just to have a feel...and realized I have no other source that can provide such a unique sound. It is irreplaceable. I have to hold on to it. Goodbye extra cash.

When I use the Gryphon with Tidal Master on my Windows 11 PC (with the newest iFi driver installed) every single bitrate (PCM, MQA, DSD whatsoever) of each song is shown
correctly on its display. When I use the Gryphon with Tidal Master on my Android v13 mobile phone or tablet the Gryphon shows the correct bitrate / sound format only for the first song played !?
Whats the problem here ? Android ? Tidal Android app ? Gryphon ?

Thanks for any advice....

Has anyone had an issue where the Gryphon won’t output sound when the battery gets below 50 or 60%? I need to connect it to power to get sound working again. It will also work if I turn the volume above 100, but that’s way too loud.

My guess would be the issue is with the interaction between the Android operating system and the Tidal app.

I have two Android DAPs that I use with the Gryphon and the Gryphon shows correct data with both same as it does with an iPhone 15, iPad, MacBook and Windows 11 laptop.

just a question, how many times can you recharge the battery and whats the score when needed a new battery?

The charge cycles should logically be like any other phone or battery powered device, that is typically around 300 to 500 full cycles.

The Gryphon does have an odd battery that is two cells in an L shape which makes user replacement less straightforward than some.

Your battery mileage is likely to vary depending on charging habits, frequency of use and luck but mine is good for around 8 hours. It is two years old and used full to nearly flat for probably an average of a couple of times a week in rotation over the two years.

Can't get or give any better than the real-world usage and experiences posted right here.

Thanks for sharing them!

Cheers!!

@iFi audio

I'm owning the Gryphon (it came with the latest firmwares installed) for a week now and I'm confused about it's "USB dual port charge" feature. Do I have to use two cables for it or just one in form of powering and data uses the same USB cable ? When I need just one cable what's about sound quality when turning "USB dual port charge" on ?
Will there be a difference ?

Please enlighten me

Here is what I got in answer to your question...

Make sure you have the USB Dual Port Charge switched on, on your xDSD Gryphon and connected via the Type-C. At this point, it will bypass the battery to power the system directly with the Type-C and can input the audio signal normally. The battery will also be checked and charged to full capacity, but it will stop charging once full. Having your Gryphon in use and charging at the same time won't do any long-term damage to the battery.

After enabling the Dual port in the menu, you are using one USB-C cable connected to the Data port!

Hope this helps!

Cheers!!

I guess that's not exactly how it works. Unfortunately, when I follow these instructions, but turn the Gryphon off for the night (without disconnecting the USB-C cable) and turn it on in the morning, the Gryphon is charged again for some time. Keeping the battery at such a high level for a long time and having to top it up every time I turn on the Gryphon doesn't seem to be healthy for the battery.

You will note that after a short time the charging indicator goes out, in that case the battery is no longer charging rather just sitting there fully charged. The indicator never seems to come back on meaning the battery is not charging on and off, logically it would intermittently over an extended period when the battery would naturally lose some charge even if not used.

I understand the Gryphon (and Diablo which behaves exactly the same way) has a true desktop mode, just not a lot is made of it in the advertising unlike the Mojo 2 for which the advertising talks about the desktop mode because the original was well known for not having sophisticated battery management.

I agree though, I prefer to turn off the dual port charge feature (poorly named because it is actually a single port being used) and cycle the battery through a full drain and charge from time to time.
