xDSD Gryphon: birth of a ‘head-fi’ legend

I guess nobody is wondering about the aptx-lossless support I guess?

It will only matter if you have a source that is also lossless capable and that I imagine will only be the latest high end phones.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I don't know the details, but I guess the support needs to be built into the hardware of the phone as well as the receiving device and isn't something that is added with a software update to the phone, much like you are observing is the case with your quest to determine whether Gryphon can support it or not.

Even the motorola z30 ultra, which is not the most expensive phone supports aptx-lossless.

Why I am a little annoyed is because ifi is vague which qcc51xx is used, just be clear, say which version so people can make a choice. If it is not the qcc5171, everyone know, aptx-lossless is of the list ‘ever’

My Gryphon was exchanged after battery issues. Rechecking again. With android USB, it always shows DXD 384 when hi-res audio is played! Qobuz or Tidal MQA! This is when it is used with UAPP as a USB DAC.
Native Tidal APP only shows OFS instead of MQA! The first layer of decoding done by the Android? Does it fully support MQA decoding?
Bugs? Hardware?

You probably have upsampling in UAPP turned ON and Bit Perfect turned OFF. I just checked and that is exactly what Gryphon shows with those settings.

Turn upsampling OFF, bit perfect ON and MQA pass through ON in UAPP and Gryphon with show "MQA".

"OFS" is correct from the native Tidal app and Tidal MQA tracks since the app does the first unfold, that is the apps design, you can't change that and it is normal and the same end result ..... MQA just looks cooler in forum pictures.

Yes the Gryphon is a full MQA decoder that is why MQA will show on the display if using MQA pass through in UAPP or on Mac or PC Tidal apps.

Thank you! I was having those setting on. I upgraded the firmware and did a factory reset. Now it works with UAPP.

Could someone confirm if this is the Qualcomm chip in the ifi xdsd Gryphon? Did some more digging, knowing that it only supports Bluetooth 5.1 I expect it to be the following chip.
Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth 5.1
Qualcomm® aptX™ Audio
Qualcomm® aptX™ Voice
Qualcomm® aptX™ Adaptive

Following missing:
Qualcomm® aptX™ Lossless 1.2mb transfer 24bit 96Khz (LDAC is 990kb)

I saw this only on the specs of the QCC5171 Bluetooth 5.3

So it seems we can forget Aptx-Lossless on the ifi xdsd gryphon, knowing that last year the QCC5171 was available, a shame they did not use this chip
Eventhough they mention they might add new future codecs, I don't believe they can change a chip. Really annoyed to be honest, mostly at Qualcomm as well
Probably every phone will support aptx-lossless this year, already seen a few like the Motorola z30 ultra.

I think with the things you find not to your liking with the Gryphon you should return it, seems obvious you are never going to be happy with it.

With the balanced port and the 4.4 iematch (which sounded different than the 3.5), I was actually happy, until I found out they just don't support something that was already known in the beginning of 2021, the chip was already there???? when they created the device?

So yes, even tough I don't like returning it now, I probably have to return it and sadly don't see an alternative at this moment.... I hate spending this kind of money for what to me feels like and outdated device now.

I think you contradict your own criticism of the Gryphon.

On the one hand you say it is outdated and you criticise the apparent lack of lossless Bluetooth and then you state that there are no other DAC available now that support lossless Bluetooth despite some being much more recent products than the Gryphon. They could have used the chip that supports it but apparently didn’t either.

If you are fundamentally happy with the Gryphon sound and features and have found a solution to the hissing issue maybe consider how big a deal the lossless bluetooth really is.

Would it be nice to have, of course, but is it really that critical ? LDAC sounds fantastic, I personally don’t hear any huge difference between LDAC and AAC and both are more than good enough for on the go listening.

Gryphon does a great job with Bluetooth but even with lossless Bluetooth (which I understand isn’t truly lossless anyway) wired is still going to be better at the desktop listening at home.

Just my opinion but it doesn’t concern me in the slightest that Gryphon possibly, even probably, won’t support lossless Bluetooth.
