Only you will know which setup is the best for you.

Obviously after having some listening to each.

Do I look like YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE?

My vote goes for the second option, though. I despise HD 650 by all means, you see. And 0404 is a good choice. Not to mention that I was a proud owner of HD 595 for a some time and they were sufficient for my purposes.

My hint: a good source is very important. Some people say X-Fi is not among good sources.

X-Fi XtremeMusic can be decent if set up a little. Here is what I do.

Set X-Fi to 2 channel output, not headphone and no other enhancements.

Run Foobar with Kernal Stream at 24 bit, also use a plugin to allow Foobar to upsample to 96. No Dither.

Match the 24/96 with X-Fi.

Not the best, but not bad at all, especially when running into a decent amp.

Why not 0404 USB to HD650? I don't know about the amping of that device.

simpler answer: if you think the bass on your current hd595s are not enough, sell the 595 and x-fi, then use that money to buy the HD650 + EMU 0404 USB. there was a thread with this one guy buying thousands of $$$ worth of equipment, only to end up with the 0404 USB + HD650 as his ultimate setup.

my $0.02

Yes, yes... this could result in a happy ending. (Considering your wallet, of course.)

I have both the X-Fi and the Emu-0404 USB in my system, and have for a while. As far as music playing, the Emu is superior in every way, and easily noticibly so. The only reason to use an X-Fi is for gaming.

I can't imagine that the 595 won't sound better out of an Emu then an HD650 would out of the X-Fi (They're hard to drive anyway, or so I hear). That said, beware of the headphone out on the Emu, as it sucks. I would strongely suggest pairing it with an amp (Any amp would be better, including something like an Airhead).

I saw some refurbished HD650's on ebay for 300$ , generally I think their price is somewhere in 300-400$ range I think.
I would also add HD600's to the equation.
I myself am considering HD600's at the moment since my 580's headband snapped and is fixed temporarily and it might take a few months until I get a replacement.
According to some review I saw here recently it is the most neutral from high end Senn's nowdays.

an x-fi puts out about as much power as a cmoy amp. still not enough for a senn 650

x-fi to hd 595 would work without an amp. your 2 choices both need amps of some kind tho
