i can get the X-Can v3 for a pretty decent price, and i was wondering how it pairs with the Sony CD3000's. i got to hear the X-Cans with either the Grado RS-1 or 2 at the Cincinnati meet (i can't remember which phones it was), and it sounded very lively and punchy. does it pair pretty well with the CD3000's? please say no, because i'm perfectly happy with my Corda (more than happy, really), but the X-Can just screams "you want the tube, the tube, the hybrid tube!!) every time i see it mentioned anywhere

I used to have a CD3000 and X-Can v3 and I have to say that I felt it was not a good combination. Bright and metallic, with little bass and very artificial sounding. I would not recommend them together at all.

), and the hiss alone makes me no longer want the x-can. the corda has a completely black background, and i don't think i could take the hiss, even if everything else was great. i don't even know why i had this sudden urge to get an X-Can. like i said, i'm more than happy with the Corda. this forum has a strange effect on me.

I listened to the X-Can in the city last weekend and I didn't like it much. Rather bright for a tube amp. Also it wasn't as detailed as I've heard from other amps. It can't compete with some of the better quality DIY PPAs and Gilmores.

The tubes used are Jan 6922 which are known to be quite bright. I don't detect any hiss or background noise in mine though. I can't comment about the detail, but I have a HD 595 which is quite detail at least for me. I think its a good entry level amp though I can purchase anything else since I don't get anything else here

I'm curious about the Sony MD SA5000. I hope it will pair well with XCans. I hope to tuberoll soon.

I picked up a X-Can V3 and X-PSU for my girlfriend over the weekend, and I have to say that the X-PSU makes a huge difference compared to the puny wall-wart. We tried a number of headphones with it over the last couple of days including the Sony CDR3000s, and there was absolutely no hiss or noise with any of the phones. In fact you can turn the volume all the way up and it is totally silent. The X-PSU was partly responsible for this as there was a little more background noise with the wall-wart. The combination with the Sony headphones is a little bright, but very fast and articulate. The detail is very good, and the soundstage is the same huge one we all associate with the Sonys. The only issues that I felt were relavent was the bass being a little laid back and not as deep as I've heard. 6922 tubes being readily available means the amp can be tuned somewhat.

Having said all this, the combination of X-Cans/X-PSU is approaching $800 (although discounts can be had), and in that price range there is some serious competition. I went with this combination partly because of the aesthetics (we are a square box couple), partly because we plan on getting a tube buffer and because of the good, if not the last word in, sound quality.

I definitely think there is some resistance here to mainstream gear, but some of it CAN give specialist manufacturers a run for their money.

The reseller told me that u get cleaner sound and better low detail due to cleaner power. I can't vouch for that though.

I think the X-PSU can power up 4 equipment (???) so if you use it just for the XCan, you're only getting a quarter of your money worth.

Better make your own PSU
