Would you like to have Rockbox on X3 ..., and would you pay ?

Why would anyone pay for a free player?

Its not practical to pay someone to do a port to your MP3 player if that is what you are really asking.  Embedded programmer's time is extremely costly, and the money your users could pay would be far too small.

No, this wasn´t the motivation !!

Here in the forum a lot people ask about the Rockbox FiiO X3 Port and i found it very interesting to see how much interested people there are really.

...and maybe the result is open up one party to another :)

Some work is already done for the JZ series Sytem on Chip.

Rockbox - Ingenic
Rockbox - ChinaChip
Rockbox - Onda VX747

But who / what is the money for? Getting people to agree to pay in principle is different than getting people to actually pay in practice. I think a proposal laid out in a Kickstarter fashion such as targets: A) $X- Buy Fiio X3 for these Rockbox devs who presently work on other ingenic platforms. (not just randomly, contact them in advance)  B) $Y - Buy same devs X3s and offer cash incentive. Sort of thing. If there are any active Ingenic Rockbox devs then I'm sure that if they had a Fiio X3 in their hand they'd want to work on it.

Also, it's potentially of benefit to others with Ingenic devices such as dingoo, e.t.c. maybe there are others who would fund a more general ingenic kickstarter that would benefit X3.

Anyway, in case you already know all that, I would chip in $30.

From James @ Fiio

"about the firmware for X3, we will seperate it into two main step:

step 1:

1, new data base which will used in X5. which is very fast and stable.

2, added some new feature, includes DSD playback, and some other new small features like more cover support, albume after artist

3, some bugs fix.

all this is based on the work of X5's firmware, we have to wait the success in X5.

step 2:

a total new GUI for X3, and this will be the end of the firmware upgrading. the next generation of X3 willl use new UI which based on X5."

Emphasis my own. It looks to me like the x3 is going to get a major hardware revision making future X3 firmware incompatible with present x3 hardware. Any wishes you might have for new features in x3, if they don't make it into the next 2 firmware updates you're not going to get them from Fiio for this hardware. Which means that if you're not entirely happy with your Fiio X3 gen 1 performance after the next 2 firmware updates you're going to have to suck it up, replace it with another device, X3 gen 2? or hope for Rockbox support for the features you wanted from Fiio.

Given this new info, how much would you pay for Rockbox for the Fiio X3 gen 1?

All you tell me in your comment above sounds very interesting and will be the right way ...but its not like Rockbox,
...not even iOS for the Classic is that, and thats the highest standard in DMP OS & Quality (for me) you can
set, except the Equalizer.

Rockbox is...

"totally customizable"   "is more OS than GUI"  "give me total free access to my files!"
"Never missed a thing"  "OK, needs time to learn how"

Alright, you see...i love it and the best for my loved darling, Rockbox, could be to marriage
with the FiiO X3  ...that would be amazing !!!

...it would be even better when he had a clickwheel  ....but maybe there will be a child

!!! Free the X3 for Rockbox !!!

As you guys should see now, this comment was misinterpreted. James meant a major new revision of firmware for existing X3s (such as the current 3.0 firmware)
