My friend does not enjoy the HD595 (he preferes the Beats Studio; don't ask, beats me). He is willing to sell them to me for $150. Would that be a good purchase? Is the X3's sufficient to drive them?

Also, how are the HD595's compared to the Q701's and the SR80i's? Could I have some advice?

Thank you!

It's not worth it. You can get a pair of the HD 598's at Fry's for only $150.

The Sennheiser HD 598 are a more refined headphone than the HD 595 and though some may argue the HD 558 sounds like the HD 598 with the foam mod, that's not true.

They may have similar or identical drivers but the grills are different and other various points which changes the sound a bit.

You can check my review below for more information about the HD 598's.

the hd595 has very weak bass so if your friend is a basshead, it's no surprise he likes the beats better. Honestly it would help knowing what kind of music you like and what you'll be plugging the headphones into, as well as where you'll be using them most.

I listen to BSB, Japanese Female Vocal, old rock (eagles), acdc, eminem..... large genre really, but for rap i would switch to my monster turbine pro coppers, which are really good iems despite all the people dissing them.

I also love anime, so much of the japanese female vocal is due to that

Do you own a DAC? An amp? A portable music player? What do you plan on plugging the headphones into?

at present I have the Fiio X3's which is a pretty good player. I plan to purchase an inexpensive but efficient DAC+AMP after a while though. I am only a student, but I plan to be an audiophile for a lifetime

Well at around that price you have the ATH-M50 which is a serious contender, Grado SR80is, the HD598 some have mentioned already, the Beyer DT990 Pro is around that much also on amazon... Considering you seem to enjoy vocal oriented music the most, I would look primarily at the 598s and the DT990 Pro. The ATH-M50 is a good all rounder, the Grados excel for rock. Try the "review" part of the site (on the menu at the top), that'll probably be your best bet. Those are all much better choices than the 595 at that price, in my opinion.
