Sorry if this would sound outdated...
I am trying to find out a good portal player serve as a digital input for my PHA3 that can potentially ultilize all the DAC/Amp function of PHA3, including DSD decoding. 
 
What are the good combos there? I've heard the recent NW-A35 can be very good. Anyone has experience to share? and any other recommendations at the presence to make a good combo with PHA3?

I don't know about the PHA3 but my PHA 1A transfigured my NW-A35. Rather a bad sounbing DAP (no energy, heavily processed, poor dynamic...) but when used as a transport you realise how good a SONY Dac/Amp can be...

Does the equalizer still work over the digital output?

I use it with Sony PHA-2A.
Nope. Equalizer (and any other audio processing) doesn't work over digital output.
