Would it be a big jump moving from HD600 to DT880?

I have the HD600 now and I like it a lot pairing it with SMv3 from Xin. But I've been hearing a lot of good things about the DT880 from you guys. I'm thinking to go for it but not sure how much improvement the DT880 will give. I tried to do a search from the forum but did not get a direct answer. Would you guys please help me out?

Thanks a lot. Poor my wallet.

The HD600 and DT880 aren't considered that different in terms of technical ability, though they have very different sound signatures (note: some people would disagree). Well, back in the old days when the DT880 had come out but not the HD650, the DT880 and HD600 were considered on an approximately equal level, as flagship cans (excluding the Orpheus) of their respective manufacturers. Nowadays I hear people comparing the DT880 more with the HD650 than the HD600. That may be a function of loss on the HD600's part of flagship status, but it still makes me wonder about how the times change. But in either case, if you prefer the DT880 sound more than the HD600 then the change, which is likely more a side-step than an upgrade, may be worth it, but if you are satisfied with the HD600 then I personally wouldn't find any reason to get the DT880, unless you're just curious and can afford it. If you want a true upgrade, you should go for the HD650.

I am going to second this.. it is a side step and not an upgrade. I think for a change it is good. Personally, I like the DT 880's over the HD600s. More sound stage, more detail. HD600s more lush sound and alittle dark.

All good so far. I have both the DT-880 and the HD-650, and an empty wallet too. Both are good all-around phones. I listen to classical mostly. I like them both, but my ideal phones would be 60% 880's / 40% 650's. I prefer the expansive stage of the 880's but they are just a bit brittle and cold sometimes.

Listening to harp music on the 880's is like plucking cobwebs inside your head - fantastic - but a bit cold with piano music.

600>650 would be the upgrade to make IMO

To my ears the DT-880 is a side step to the HD-600. Both phones are at the same level of sonics. If you like the Senn house sound, you might be better of getting the HD-650 w/ upgrade cable. The DT-880 is a very lively phone with excellent male vocal. The soundstage is also good; however, I prefer a more liquid sound of the the HD-600. BTW, nice Thai flag. Are you Thai?

On some systems its a side step. Not better or worse just different. The Beyer is a cleaner more lively presentation. However on mid level equipment the Beyer shines where I found the Senn dead.

Very good point there.

Thanks everyone. I will hold off on the DT880 then. AKG is coming out with K601 and K701. I guess I will wait to see how they sound before making another attempt to empty my wallet.

Yes, Purk. I am Thai. Any Thai folks around here?

I'd like to get a pair and do a "clash of the Titans" with the DT-880's, HD-650's and the K701. Anyone near KC have K701's? I'll supply the others.
