Would I be foolish to try to find a less expensive amp than the Xin SuperMacro for my K501's?

no, you won't be. but then, if you want something that's like the supermacro for cheaper, you may want to head to the diy route. see if anyone around here's willing to sell a pimeta or cheap ppa with a burr-brown opamp.
i went the diiy approach and ended up spending around... $230 total (initially cost $140) for a very decent tubeamp that i'd say rivals $350+ prebuilt amps after the tweaks and stuff

Cool. How long did it take to get the build done? Can you PM me with how I can get in touch with your tube amp guy? Also, is your tube amp a pain maintaining?
