i figuring maybe using the optical out on the ps3 would make a difference, but would it be worth it? i tried searching, but no definitive answer

i also use my phone/ipod as the audio source sometimes.

It all depends on the DAC.
If it surpass the quality of the DAC built into the PS3, yes then it will add to your setup.
