World's best Vodka

Has anyone had 42 below before ?

I got some alcohol duty free and went for some vodka as I don't have any at home. Absolut was out of stock, and it was 42 below, which I got or smirnoff red, which to me smells and tastes like methylated spirits. Haven't cracked it yet though, just curious if it's actually any good.

I'm not from Finland but I do like Finlandia quite a bit. There are so many vodkas out there to choose from but I guess that the Finlandia taste is good for me. I like a bit of taste to my Vodka. It doesn't seem to score as well as some of the others.

They describe Smirnoff as having a "classic vodka aroma." I wonder if it is classic because that's what was around for so many years?

"[T]he qualities she sought in the vodkas included elegance, neutrality and balance."

I am not a huge 'conoisseur', but I do enjoy vodkas that have a taste, so I like , when I drink them alone:

- Zubrowska (with Bison grass)

- Linie Aquavit ( I am not sure you classify it as vodka). The story is :
<<Particular to the Norwegian tradition is the occurrence of Linie akvavits (such as "Løiten Linie" and "Lysholm Linie"). These have been carried in oak casks onboard ships crossing the equator ("Linie") twice before it is sold. While many experts claim that this tradition is little more than a gimmick, some argue that the moving seas and frequent temperature changes cause the spirit to extract more flavour from the casks.>>
I like the taste of it, and it makes a good story

Chopin Owns all..the smoothest and closest to actual home made SPIRITUS (and that stuff is king)

Armadale, ketel one, Grey goose, Belvedere, and Absolut and great vodka's also but they have very different taste though..

Grey Goose and Absolut and to strong for me..the second they hit my throat it hurts. Armadale and ketel are smoother and Belvedere is a bit more refined then the rest.

but Chopin to me is the best, if you drink vodka you owe it to yourself to try a bottle sometime.

wait I dont drink..What?....

vodka is a colorless, odorless, tasteless beverage (by definition). anything above smirnoff and you are buying a fancy bottle, or buying expensive drinks to establish your status.

Heh, I deliver that stuff but the only time I've seen it was at the end of the year when the reps were cutting massive package deals to clear inventory. I thought the stuff must be pure trash but maybe it's just not marketed well enough. Lord knows Grey Goose is 98% marketing.

Oh and Svedka gets a mention from me, along with Finlandia. Both are well balanced and a great value for something a bit better than Smirnoff (NY Times be damned.)

Hrm.. I'd probably go with Ketel One or Grey Goose, but they are going into the pricier range of Vodka.

Sidenote: I've always been curious about Starka type vodkas.. anyone got a recommendation for one of those?

That's why I like the Zubrowska (availabelat ABC in US, Although not exactly the same one I enjoy in France) or the Linie (not easily availablein US I think)
Please try the Zubrowska

funny you should say that. there was a blind (not double) taste test i saw on tv last week for vodka. they had about 6 young, hip folks, who look like they spend a lot of time in upscale clubs, do a blind taste test.

all of the tested said their favorite vodka was grey goose, the most expensive on the list.

by itself, the group rate grey goose BY FAR the worst tasting of the vodkas, even above smirnoff. they described it as a thick, greasy flavor.

the informal study in my opinion started with a false conclusion: that people pick a vodka for the taste. from what i saw in the test, these people pick a vodka based on their own sense of self-worth: the "only the best for me, because i am one of the best."; or, to impress by conspicuous consumtion: "look at me i can afford a $25 martini!".
