Seya was one of my favorite records of last year, but then, Oumou and I go waaayyy back. I took my wife to an Oumou Sangare concert on our first date. Sangare is so popular in her home country (Mali) that a Chinese car manufacturer exported a line of jeeps there with her name: They're called Oum Sangs…which I think is just hilarious.

If you like Oumou Sangare I highly recommend Issa Bagayogo another Malian musician. His album Timbuktu was my first exposure to this style and eventually I heard Oumou Sangare who is also great.

Or my personal favorite, the eponymous 1992 Rounder release (tracks recorded in the early 70s, I believe).

High Priest…what up, yo? Thought about you the other night cuz guitar-god Diblo Dibala gigged here in NYC, but I wasn't able to catch him.

I have both Ambassadeurs LPs, too, but I actually give the edge to Mandjou cuz I think "Mandjou" and "N'Toman" rank high among the coolest funk and rumba tracks in history. Kante Manfila's guitar is just ridiculous

It's going pretty good, mon! Too bad you missed Diblo this time. I saw him in a small club in Philly in the early '90s, and it was one of my top 5 shows of all time. He had just split from Loketo and was obviously feeling his oats. Saw him one or two other times after that, and it wasn't as transcendent as that first show, but still better than 90% of the other shows I've seen.

I've got "Mandjou" on Retrospective and "N'Toman" on Music in My Head, so I've got to be at least half way there on Mandjou?

Break out your wallets, Head-fi Afro-poppers. The Stern's Music label in London just put the word out about their forthcoming 18-CD set, Africa: 50 Years Of Music, 1960-2010. I think they're saying the first 50 sold from their site will be 50 GBP.

Heads up, new release over at Soundway:

Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria

The World Ends is the latest title from Soundway Records showcasing a wave of guitar driven and psychedelic groups that sprung up in Nigeria during the early 1970s. Featuring 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves, this is the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war.

Spread over 2 CDs and 2 triple gatefold LPs, this bumper collection is brimming with youthful exuberance, fuzzed out guitar and cosmic organ vibes and owes much to the psychedelic sounds of Jim Morrison, Santana, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and James Brown.

As the summer of love was blossoming in London and San Francisco, Nigeria was imploding into civil war. Also known as the Biafran war of 1967, it was a grisly conflict taking over three million lives yet at the same time as the country was being pulled apart there was a new world beginning. The tracks featured represent a forgotten chapter in Nigeria’s musical history when the youth threw their varied morsels into the pot from hard rock to psychedelic soul when guitars were cherished instruments, symbolic of a new movement, when highlife and Afrobeat played second fiddle to ‘the beat’.

CD Double Digi Pack with 44 page booklet
Triple Gatefold Vinyl (Version 1 & 2) – BONUS TRACKS INCLUDED

Listening to some Asian Rough Guide collections right now and they aren't of high quality in my opinion. Not soundwise but even more just musically. I am looking for something of the Soundway label stature but aimed at Asian music. Does anyone have some good recommendations?

Thanks for an excellent, comprehensive list!

On the more "serious" side of traditional folklore of the Americas,
May I suggest "Quetzalcoatl" from Mexico.
Guafa Trio from Colombia,
"Les Luthiers" from Argentina,
