AFAIK, not all sound cards have drivers which support ASIO. I would guess that this is the problem you are experiencing. What sound card are you using?
The problem you are having is exactly the same problem I have when I switch from my Echo Indigo (which has ASIO support) to my onboard Crystal Audio (which does not have ASIO support) on my laptop. I have to switch the output to waveOut to make it work when the echo isn't being used.
You might try hitting up the guys at the hydrogen audio forums, a lot of experts on this sort of topic there.

I had the same problem that you had...but its really quite simple to solve. After you get out of the Aiso menu, make sure you still do not have the aiso option highlighted from the menu. Instead, highlight it back to original
setting (for me it was directsound output) then exit. It should play the music with all the settings that you made with the Aiso options. Hope this helps.
