I recently acquired a Audio-GD Master 9.  Audio-GD claims the power output of the amp in single ended mode to be:
40 ohm:   2500mW
100 ohm: 1050mW
300 ohm: 350mW
600 ohm:   175mW

and the output in balanced mode to be:
40 ohm:   9000mW
100 ohm: 3800mW
300 ohm: 1250mW
600 ohm:   630mW

I use Senn HD650(300 ohm impedance; long term max power input:500mW) daily in single ended mode.  I am currently having a balanced cable made.  If I use that balanced cable, won't the Master 9 destroy my headphones since 1250mW > 500mW?  Likewise, I was thinking about purchasing the Fostex TH-900 and recabling them for balanced.  With an impedance of 25 ohms and a max input of 1800mW, wont these die as well?

Does this mean my amp is mostly meant for headphones like the LCD collection for Hifiman HE-6 in balanced mode?

I've searched but it seems nobody has mentioned this before?

Your headphones don't care how much power your amp is capable of delivering, only how much it is actually delivering. You control the amount of power it delivers using the volume knob. If you actually put 500mW of power into your HD650s they would be extremely loud. Don't turn them up extremely loud and they will not be damaged.

Yeah, amp specs are maximum, as in the output power when you turn the volume knob all the way up. Just turn the volume knob to zero when connecting the headphones and turning on the amp, then gradually increase the volume knob until you reach your desired loudness.

Ooooohh, thank goodness!  I thought that might be the case but I was not sure at all.

The Master 9 remembers my last volume setting, so it always restarts at a safe volume.
