Over the holidays I am looking into getting a new monitor to use in my dorm room. Since I will being watching alot of movies and tv shows (and doing some graphic work) I think I would really enjoy a widescreen. However I need some recommendations on something around 20 inches or so. Probably no bigger than 22 inches. Basically I want the best picture quality for the cheapest price. My target is to spend less than $400 total.

www.newegg.com usually has the best prices. Just make sure the pixel response time is at least 16ms or you'll get streaking.

There is a no-frills version of that 20" Dell monitor that is going for about $260 right now (so no usb ports and that crap). I'm going for one of those real soon.

The cheaper 20" Dell widescreen is a completely different monitor. I would go with the 2007wfp for movies and graphic work.

Black Friday is coming up. I'm going to pick up this monitor:

It's going to be on sale for $199 at Best Buy on Black Friday (Nov. 24).

The Samsung 931BW (19" widescreen) will also be on sale $129 at Best Buy.

No, as bmp2000 said, there is a *new* cheaper Dell widescreen that is the same panel but with no frills for about $260 w/ coupon from ebay most likely.

I just got a Dell 2407WFP, the 24" widescreen all decked out in features. It has an incredibly bright and sharp screen, multiple inputs (Picture-in-Picture so I can watch satellite tv at the same time), a card-reader, and is really at a great price point for its size (refurb price $600 + shipping & taxes). I love it!

I started to order a refurb Apple Cinema 23" because it matches my G5, but in the end I'm glad I got the Dell -- it looks great and matches just as well. It's very well constructed and heavy and oh, forgot to mention, it rotates to vertical (if you need such a view).

Now, I know you wanted a smaller monitor, which the 2007WFP would offer -- all the same features pretty much, in a smaller monitor and a cheaper price ($299 refurb).

Happy shopping,

Yeah, I was also thinking about picking up one of those, my CRT is getting old and starting to have issues.

It is a different panel though, that's what I meant. The cheap one uses a TN panel which is 6-bit so image quality is poor and the colors wash out if you aren't sitting directly in front of it. The 2007wfp uses S-IPS which has the best image quality and broadest viewing angles.

consider a Viewsonic VX2025. It has a 8bit panel but doesn't have the extra inputs like the Dell 2007wfp.

If extra components, like "component, DVI, USB" etc is not a big factor at all, go for a BenQ or an Acer, for the price

If you want a bit more features, then go Dell

If you want a better picture, my guess would be a Samsung, but pricey

I didn't primarily get mine for the extra inputs, and at first I didn't think I'd use them. Then I realized real quick that it saves me crooked necks, old TVs, etc just to hook my satellite receiver right to the screen (picture in picture or switch to full screen). Kinda neat, and something to consider (you could equally do this with cable box).
