Why is the iPod not a good enough mp3 player?

To me their still is a clear improvement in overall dynamics, imaging and sound staging via its line out dock, although the iphone headphone out is better than most of its older siblings. Now from a portable stand point its hard to go wrong. But for me carrying around a mini amp really isn't a hassle to me like it would be for others. My UHA4 is smaller than the iphone as well.

Are you speaking of the iPhone4 as well? I guess I just don't hear it that way, as I never use an amp with the iPhone4 and the HP sounds even better compared to other DAPs I have owned, including the Sony A860 (which I just returned) and the Clip+, for example. I like using the LOD/amp setup with the iPod Classic 160GB (7th Gen), that I agree with. I just don't feel the need to amp the iPhone4, plus, I like using IEMs with a mic with the iPhone. Again, I had the 601, but really worried more about durability than anything else. And I didn't care for the UI much either. Yes, it sounded good, but not any better than the iPod Classic via LOD and an amp. So I kept the latter and sold the 601.

Yeah it can be a bit awkward using the amp when taking calls lol. That is why I barely use it as a listening source (normally when I'm in a pinch and my other source has no power :). And EQU does wonders. I just recently purchased it after hearing the raves here on headfi. Definitely worth the $3.00 price tag although I think it should have come included on the ipod :p

I know, I had the UHA-4 too, but I just can't abide by carrying an amp with a phone (ruins the ability to take calls easily), so I just use the Spider realvoices for on the go listening, no amp, just EQu.

I use an amp at home, and since the Classic has 160GB capacity, I prefer it over the iPhone via LOD, as you say. Sort of like I have different players for different uses. I also use the Rocoo, a small Chinese player, for portability around the house, rather than the iPhone.

If I was sitting on a train or plane, however, I might use an amp with the iPhone, since it's stationery listening (and use the JH5s instead of the Spiders as well).
