Why is the audigy 2 so bad?

Actuallt, the original (non-ZS) A2 and A2 Platinum cannot output true 96/24. Instead, it resamples all 96/24 audio to 48/32 and then back.

The A2 Platinum eX and all A2 ZS series can output true 96/24 with the latest drivers, provided that you disable all DSP effects.

I believe you are incorrect about this. If this was the case all sound above 24 KHz would be eliminated as it is impossible to sample higher frequencies than that with a 48KHz sample rate. Upsampling again would make no difference as the data would have already been destroyed. However, it is easy to demonstrate (using an external lookback test in RMAA, or playback and recording from wave editors) that with no DSP effects applied a bog standard Audigy 2 can output waves in excess of 24 KHz, and reaches at least 48KHz which would require 96 KHz output. I haven't personally been able to test any higher as I don't have anything with a 192KHz input.
