Why does my SACD layer play but my CD layer (on a hybrid SACD) doesn't?

I've tried this on four different players:  two from laptops (an old HP and an ASUS) as well as a separate ASUS CD drive, and an Onkyo 6-CD changer.  The great news is that the SACD itself plays perfectly on my Oppo DV-981HD (haven't tried it yet on the Oppo BDP-83 SE Nu Force Edition, fingers crossed).   I've heard of the opposite - the SACD layer not playing, but never the redbook layer.  The redbook layer plays 13 of 15 tracks - the last two won't play.  The hybrid disc was "painted on the edges" (I would never have done that), and some apparently ended up on the data portion, past the edges.  That won't come off (I tried very, very gently with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips).  The good news is that I have the red book CD anyway, but it is kind of annoying; hopefully, since the SACD plays well now (it's a disc from late 2004), it won't degenerate.   I believe the SACD layer is not as deep as the CD layer on hybrid discs, but whether that makes a difference is anyone's guess.

Thoughts?
