Jesus! I just stubbed my toes on a set of 10kg weights.
Why do we even have toes? It seems their only purpose is to get banged against things.

They are there for balance and to remind us to keep the floor clear of heavy objects.

Ha, a 10 kg set of weights.

Last night I tripped over my weight rack, that happened to be holding a variety of weights from 10 - 50 lbs. Ouch.

Try walking with your toes curled up (the faster the better) and you'll soon find out why.

'nuff said.

I got one that's better:

phylogy follows ontogeny

Blame your ancestors for wanting to leave the water!!! My shins get as banged up as my toes when I can't see where I'm going.

yep....my anatomy professor said that phrase a lot (used phylogy, not phylogeny): his main specialty was anthropology. It's especially evident when you observe the gestation of an embryo of a human. We all start off looking like a fish embryo, then to amphibian, then on to mammalian.

Try walking with your toes cut off.
Then I am 100% sure you are going to miss them, and fully understand why we have them...

Don't do it; trust me you need them for balance, especially the large ones
