why do so many people have terrible taste in music?

Music is a very personal thing. You can't really tell someone what music to "like". There will always be music that you will not like. I don't think anyone feels bad because someone else despises they're taste. I find that music is very associative. Linked to some memory, event, emotion, time, etc. Ask yourself why you like/love your favorite music sometime. Just as musicians have influences in their style, we have our own varied influences that have molded our tastes (friends, upbringing, see the rest above). It would be a pretty sad world if everyone had the same taste.

Like Falcon pointed out: Peer Pressure for the kids. They gotta own what all the other kids have to fit in. Notice how head-fi has so many people that are, uh, anti-social? Hmmm. I always listened to what I LIKED, i didn't give a rats ass for all that rap and pop **** when i was in Junior High, the worst period of time for any kid who doesn't follow the trends.

All those chart toppers are there because of kids and teens, not because of adults. Adults spend most of their money on catalog titles.

i like that fact that a lot of what i listen to won't ever be on the top 10 list. its not that i want the musicians to not make money, but i selfishly enjoy being able to see them live in a small venue and for under $20.

i vote to keep the charts full of crap!

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good. Who appointed you arbiter of what is and isn't good music?

lol... That's a very good point! 'Course if they cut out the industry middle-man some how (sell CDs on their own label at concerts or something like that) they might be able to make a living doing that too... Everybody wins!

This thread reminds me of the time Britney Spears album Oops I did it Again came out. The store had a special opening at twelve midnight. There was a long side walk next to the store that was full of people two blocks long in both directions. A good 25 percent of the crowd were adults. I was shocked and repulsed. They don't like the music. They just want to follow the trends

We had this awsome classic rock station here in the area that was around for approx. 20 years. They played a lot of B sides, etc, from the 60s and 70s. I could listen to that station for hours on end. Then they got bought out by a national company, and the lousy pricks changed the format to pre-programed, taped DJ, top 40!

About 95% of the market share in my area is top 40/country. IMO, FM is dead. If I listen to the radio at all, its either AM talk, or my local National Public Radio station for Echoes and Hearts of Space.

i have but its on WAAAY to early for me. i'm driving half-asleep to work at 8:30am and they're wrapping up their show...
