I recently bought a pair of audio technica ad900 headphones. They are paired with an x-fi sound card. Compared to my $40 pc speakers, i notice a lot of music does not sound as clear, like there is a lot of low cracking noise happening either randomly or throughout a song. Is this just my cd or mp3 quality?

Assuming that you don't have any cables coming loose, I'd say your sound card is to blame.

i noticed it with my portable cd player too, do u think that it's just the quality of the original recording, like 70's songs on cd?

If your speaker haves headphone out then check it from there.

Check that the 6.3mm plug adapter is screwed on tightly.

Try your headphones with other sources. If you can, go to an audio shop and ask if you can use their gear for a quick listen.

The headphones or cord may be defective; go for an exchange.
