Average customer rating is **** (four stars, out of *****)

But what caught my eye are those two reviews:

Skullcandy tastes like crap, November 23, 2008

They look pretty. Thats about all. Very uncomfortable, cord is too short,
and they heat up your ears very fast. I would give the sound a 4/10.
The earbuds that came with my mp3 player sounded better.
This sounds like some teenagers honda civic, all bass and nothing else.
I would not recommend these. ..

BUYER BEWARE.
This piece of junk is NOT sound canceling, and it can clearly be heard
by other people in the room.
The quality is below average compared to buds,
and rest on the ears weirdly. The "amazing bass quality"
that people rave about is sub par. Do not buy, go sony instead.

I was confused by the thread title. Does Metallica have some audiophile non-commercial sensibility that remains hidden to this fan? They have been (IMO of course) much more of a business than a band for at least 15 years or so.

I like older Metallica, haven't heard the last CD. But I think Hetfield probably forgot how to sing sometime around S&M - I just hate his "...and nothing else matterzzzzz"... But maybe it's just me...

The links on the compression and hot recordings in the OP are very good reads.
To be honest I never really cared about this kind of stuff until recently when I heard what music /should/ sound like on an old reel to reel machine that I recently aquired. What's with this new stuff?! I think hot recording may be partly to blame for my dislike of the Phonak PFE. I did not have an amp when I got them, but other than the need of an amp I think they were just truly reproducing the sound, which SUCKED. At that time I was listening to a lot of new albums from bands, Death Magnetic being one of them. After I got my atrios and it still sounded like utter crap, I stopped listening to metallica. I would at least like to listen to a band that cares about SQ, as if listening to compressed music (albeit 320kbps mp3) isn't bad enough. What also bugs me is that when listening to new music and then as previously mentioned, Appetite for Destruction, I have to turn up the volume more than I should have to. The rest of my music shouldn't be so loud to create that much of a difference.
All I know is that when I end up producing an album, which I would love to do some day and may very well end up doing so, I certainly won't stand for this crap.

Skullcandy SC-HESH headphones, 4 Feb 2009

I work in the music industry and I'm also a recording engineer and hi-fi/reviewer...
The headphones are quite attractive with the Skullcandy livery and look quite expensive.
In truth the headphones are not very well made, they're lightweight and have a lightweight sound.
Out of the box the sound is muffled without any bass and no top end.
We gave them a couple of days burning in with music playing through them
to give the 'phones time to run in properly.
After a couple of days we listened to them again.
The bass had come on a little and the top end had gained a little sparkle
but the mid-range is thin and lacks any definition.
I have cheap Sony and Behringer coating a 1/3 of the Skullcandy
that out perform them in build and sound quality
.
I think they are mass produced el-cheapo headphones
made to look nice with fancy decals and a nice shiny badge.
Buy some Sennheiser, Grado or Beyer's and enjoy a far more realistic sound.

They're even said to be sell-outs only interested in money in an episode of South Park.
IMHO if Grado made Metallica headphones it would give them a bad name.
I totally agree that if Metallica appeared to be using Skullcandies, they'd probably have replaced the drivers and cables.

I've heard a number of prominent, older rock musicians complain of serious, even disastrous hearing loss (Townshend, the Nuge, Roger Miller from Mission of Burma.) Even classical musicians complain of hearing loss after decades of, say, sitting in front of the brass section.

The Metallica boys ain't exactly spring chickens, and they've been LOUDLOUDLOUD for a long time. Maybe after 30 years of standing in front of their thunderous back line on stage, they just can't tell the difference any more.

x2

They lost all respect in the metal scene, for as far they can be considered part of it with to start with. So i'm not really shook up by the fact that they endorse such garbage. I find it quite amusing, even

MONEY and because they are cheap enough to be an impulse purchase for their fan base. Not to stereotype (as I am a Metallica fan), but I would say their average listener isn't dropping $10K on hi-fi, let alone a headphone rig.

BTW, Metallica sounds killer through stats!

I have always loved that ad. Also tells you a bit about the demographics of a large cross section of Stones fans...all grown up and now working professionals with money to burn.

I have been known to frequent a certain high-end restaurant in Prague simply because it is a favorite of the Stones when they are in town. Also helps that it is the best in the city.

haha They gave the endorsement job to the new guy. I can imagine what that conversation was like. Probably had to consult their therapist.
