Why do I hear the piano only on the right and horns on the left?

Recently got into Jazz and have noticed that many of the albums I have (some Bill Evans live recordings and Coltranes GIant Stesp, amongst others)...the horns are only coming from the left and the piano can only be heard on the right.

Am finding it a bit uncomfortable to listen to this presentation for extended periods of time.

For reference, am using Senn HD598s.

Any clarification here is appreciated.

Some recordings were mastered by the audio engineers this way, with some instruments panned to one side.
