Why do I even need an amp?

Well the AKGs and Grados have a higher impedance than the iPod earbuds and are certainly less efficient (at least when you measure them at listening distance).

I dunno about the Senns but I think they're higher sensitivity, higher impedance than the Grados.

You should go tube amp. With a tube amp the brand tube can change the sonic character of the music. I am hooked myself. I am just trying to calm myself down so I do't go broke. I am building my own to save money. Head-fi is a bad place to look if you want to save money.

If you're happy with the sound without an amp then don't get one, every thing doesn't have to be perfect.
