Sep 19, 2005 at 6:43 AM Post #3 of 9
So is this guy legit? I live in the seattle area so if this guy is reliable i'd love to buy one. Never done anything with Craigslist, so sorry if im missing something here.

Edit: Ok, i just sent an email to him asking for his references and how many 4gb black ipod nano's he had left. I'll update if i get new info that hasnt been figured out already.

Double Edit: Well, i just go an auto reply back from this guy and my initial response is "Im NOT giving my credit card number to these hacks". Here is the email they auto replyed with.

"Due to a high volume of emails we first send a detailed first email we
then personally answer questions in your follow up to us.

Good Day,

We are a wholesaling business. We are selling brand new unopened ipod
nanos. You can order as little as 1 from us at wholesale price.
Depending on how many you order the price may be lowered.

We use goldex.net and e-gold for payment. Our last sale (reference)
was to a contest run by ***shack.com (adult site). You can contact
them at admin@***shack.com

If you have any questions send them on over. Please send us your exact
order request and we will quote you a total price. We have black units
as well in addition to the standard color units.

Get an e-gold.com account on e-gold.com
Get an account on goldex.net transfer the money to them via credit
card (most used)
then once you have the e-gold send it on over to our account:
2402486

E-gold is secure. You would use a credit card. They are the only
company who is able of providing us with a million dollars a year in
transactions online with low fees.

Thanks,

Monte
(Dallas, Texas)"

I edited out some letters in the email (***) due to the fact that its a website straight to pornography. encouraging, i know. While this looked good at first, there is no way im going to sign up for some "e-gold" thing then give my credit card number out to some random company in texas, who's last contact was an internet pornography company. In fact, im regretting even emailing them in the first place because they might just end up keeping my email address and spaming it forever.

I would ask him for pictures of the nano's, with a piece of paper with the date on it included in the picture w/ the nano's. Sounds kind of fishy to me, but it might be legit if he can provide proof of product.

I've heard of other people using this GoldEx site before, but I just checked their site and it seems that their Thawte certificate is invalid and they don't even know it:

http://goldex.net/?fuseaction=content.terms

look at the image on the right side of the page, half way down the page. you'll see the "invalid certificate" image. click on it for details... maybe they can't afford to renew it

don't touch this with a 10 foot dancing pole. if it seems like it's too good to be true, it usually is. if it makes you jump through any more hoops than "pay money get item DONE" then it is suspect.

Yep, craigslist is filled with this crap. It's much better (for them) than ebay because craigslist has basically no security features and no enforcement of fraud, other than deleting posts. They like to do ipods because they know people will fall for them.

I responded to one of them a while ago regarding 60gig ipods for like $250. I emailed a couple different ones, and each time I got the same response with the same picture. The best thing to do is call their bluffs (if you are that bored). It's supposed to be local, so ask to meet them. They told me they can sell for cheap because they were donated in order to raise money, and they can go through this unofficial payment method. I told them I'd pay more (way over the retail price) in order to get it though something official. Strangely, they weren't interested in that
