I am seriously considering getting a good dvd player to use as my source component for audio because of the extra functionality and money saving(especially if i can get one that plays DVD audio and SACD any recomendations?) . Does anyone else do this?

I do... My stereo system used to be composed of a gazillion components... Two beta decks, two VHS, a laserdisc, a reel to reel, CD player, cassette deck, etc... Now I just have a DVD player. I've got a preamp and noise reduction units connected to my computer, and whenever I want to play anything from the old formats, I transfer to DVD-R or CD-R.

See ya

I have a Denon 2900 I bought at ECOST.COM @ $529.95 refurbished.I then sent it to SACDmods to have it modified.I don't know of both a better and cheaper deal than this if you want a high end player. If you are straped for cash you can always listen to it stock and send it out later.

I use my Philips 963SA as a transport for my Apogee Mini-DAC. As for money saving, I'm not so sure since making a good DVD player will generally cost more than making a good CD player due to more parts required in DVD players. Good universal players are fairly expensive.

I feel the redbook from my unmodded DVD-2900 to be sub par so I will upgrade it with an external DAC later this year. $530 is practially for free for a unit of this quality, even if you may be unlucky to get one with a somewhat noisy drive. SACD playback is excellent. DVD Video playback is excellent.

The source in my living room is a modded Toshiba 3980. I'm quite happy with it.

The addition of a DAC will no dought help the performance of redbook but will do nothing to help the performance of the analog output stage.Redbook of the SACDmods Denon 2900 sounds amazing.BTW,its Zapfilter needs a large powercord to feed it.

Sounds good

Nevertheless I will go the DAC route since I want to get rid of using the 2900 for redbook at all. It will all be served from the Mac using AirTunes / AirPortExpress.

I use the Denon DVD-3910 as my source and it sounds very good. Good reviews from audioholics.com and hometheaterhifi.com. Don't know if it gets rave reviews in audiophile circles.

ssportclay,

I am thinking of doing the sacdmod to my 3910. How would you characterize the change in sound from the mod on your 2900?

It almost makes too much sense to use a DVD player as your source. I couple one with an external DAC. I feel that's the best way to go. Others feel that a modded DVD player makes more sense. One thing to caution though, as DVD players get better audio quality their video cicuitry also gets better which is quite expensive and perhaps unnecessary depending on your TV. For example, a modified high-end Denon or Pioneer will have great sound but you are potentionaly wasting a ton of money on unneeded video circuitry such as DVI, fancy video-DACs, etc. That's why I think the mid-level DVD player & external DAC is the best option.

It's exactly that: the player is opened up and modifications are made to it. Mostly to the circuit (I changed some capacitors and the opamps in mine) but also mechanical, like adding sticky tack to reduce vibrations in the transport and clock. Lots of different things can be done if you don't mind voiding your warrenty.

The new clock will remove jitter issues and make CDs more analog sounding,(no more digitalitis). The Zapfilter will actually give your Denon dynamic slam,(you will not believe it until you hear it).
